State officials say the suspected gunman in a Midland shooting that left one person dead and 10 injured died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In an update, officials with the Department of Public Safety say preliminary findings from an autopsy show the suspect, 45-year-old Victor Mata Villarreal of Odessa, QUOTE “died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”
Villareal had been in a standoff with police for multiple hours. A city employee, Ed Scott, was killed in the shooting and 10 other people were injured.
Officials have yet to say if there’s a motive for the shooting. Villareal had been wanted for attempted capital murder after firing shots at a Midland police officer. The Texas Rangers are investigating.
All this week, the city of Midland is asking residents, businesses and organizations to lower flags in honor of Scott and the others injured in the shooting.

The local nonprofit Alpine Community Projects is looking to raise money for new furniture at the municipal pool.
The organization says the city needs 16 chairs, five tables and an umbrella stand for one of the lifeguards. And the money raised by the community will be matched by the Permian Basin Area Foundation.

A reminder: Alpine ISD’s summer food program will continue through the month of June.
The district is offering lunch at Alpine High School for anyone 18 and under or anyone 24 and under with a disability–and whether or not they are enrolled in Alpine ISD.
Lunch will be served from 12:00 to 12:45, Monday through Thursday all summer long.
The district says the menu will change daily and will include a variety of options, from corndogs and pizza to chicken sandwiches and fresh fruit and veggies.

Brewster County officials hold the next commissioners court on Tuesday, June 23.
According to an agenda, commissioners are set to review, discuss and potentially take action on a resolution on the New World Screwworm. The parasitic fly wreaked havoc on the Texas cattle industry over 60 years ago. The screwworm had been eradicated from the U.S., but in recent weeks has been detected in Texas and New Mexico.
County officials are also set to receive an update from the Family Crisis Center of the Big Bend on the group’s sexual assault response team report.

The meeting will begin Tuesday morning at 9:30 at the Brewster County Courthouse.

Later this month (JUNE), Texas Parks and Wildlife will host a presentation on living with black bears at the Jeff Davis County library.
The talk will go over the bear’s natural history, their behavior and activity in the Davis Mountains as well as how you identify and secure things near your home that might attract bears.
The presentation is free and open to the public. It will be held Saturday, June 27 at 3:00 p.m. at the Jeff Davis County Library.

Next month, the Coolest 5K and 1K run will be held at the Jeff Davis County Park on Highway 17 South in Fort Davis.
The event benefits the Fort Davis Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships and classroom support to Fort Davis ISD students and teachers.
The run is part of the Fourth of July celebrations in Fort Davis, and will be on Friday, July 3.

Las autoridades estatales informan que el presunto autor de un tiroteo en Midland, que dejó un saldo de una persona fallecida y diez heridas, murió a causa de una herida de bala autoinfligida.
En una actualización, funcionarios del Departamento de Seguridad Pública señalan que los resultados preliminares de la autopsia indican que el sospechoso, Víctor Mata Villarreal —de 45 años y residente de Odessa—, murió, cito textualmente, “a causa de una herida de bala autoinfligida”.
Villarreal había protagonizado un enfrentamiento con la policía que se prolongó durante varias horas. Un empleado municipal, Ed Scott, perdió la vida en el tiroteo y otras diez personas resultaron heridas.
