Good evening, today is Friday, June 16th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Our Congressman Tony Gonzales said this week he voted to advance a bill to aid landowners, ranchers and rural communities across the nation.
The Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration and Related Agencies Appropriations bill would reimburse landowners for property damages from illegal migrants.
It would provide seven million dollars across South and West Texas and more than 25 billion in aid across the nation.
Alpine native Dr. Kendra K. DeHart has been named chair of the Behavioral and Social Sciences Department at Sul Ross State University.
She graduated from Southwestern University in Georgetown in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in History and a minor in Communication Studies.
She received her master’s in Public History from Texas State University and defended her M.A. thesis on home-demonstration work in West Texas.
She also was named Texas State’s Outstanding Graduate Student in History in 2013. A recipient of the Provost Fellowship at Texas Christian University, she earned her Ph.D. in 2020.
DeHart: “Sul Ross State University is a very special place for me since I was born here. I was raised here. My earliest milestone occurred at this particular campus.”
Provost Dr. Bernie Cantens said Dr. DeHart is a respected teacher and scholar and will be an excellent leader of the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences.

Also at Sul Ross, Bat Conservation International in association with members of the university and Texas Master Naturalist will bio-sample flowering agaves around Alpine.
The study will determine the range and population of three at-risk bat species that pollinate agaves.
A lot of bats are seen in the area but most of them are the Mexican Freetails that fly around catching insects.
Pollinating bats depend on the agave for nectar and the agave rely on the bats for pollination. Without each other, there is a risk of losing both forever.
Anyone seeing a bat on a bloom is asked to notify these organizations and, if the plant is on your property, allowing them to enter for bio-sampling also is appreciated.

The Marfa Police Department will host its Car seat Event from 10 to 2 Saturday at the Department of State Health Services at 205 East El Paso Street in Marfa.
Health Services and the Police will check child safety seats and install car seats that they will be giving out so long as the child is present.

Nuestro congresista Tony Gonzales dijo esta semana que votó a favor de promover un proyecto de ley para ayudar a los terratenientes, ganaderos y comunidades rurales de todo el país.
El proyecto de ley de Asignaciones de Agricultura, Desarrollo Rural, Administración de Alimentos y Medicamentos y Agencias Relacionadas reembolsaría a los terratenientes por daños a la propiedad causados por inmigrantes ilegales.
Proporcionaría siete millones de dólares en el sur y oeste de Texas y más de 25 mil millones en ayuda en todo el país.
La Dra. Kendra K. DeHart, nativa de Alpine, ha sido nombrada presidenta del Departamento de Ciencias Sociales y del Comportamiento de la Universidad Estatal de Sul Ross.

Se ven muchos murciélagos en el área, pero la mayoría son los Freetails mexicanos que vuelan atrapando insectos.
Los murciélagos polinizadores dependen del agave para el néctar y el agave depende de los murciélagos para la polinización. Sin el otro, existe el riesgo de perderlos ambos para siempre.
Se solicita a cualquier persona que vea un murciélago en una flor que notifique a estas organizaciones y, si la planta está en su propiedad, también se agradece que les permita ingresar para tomar muestras biológicas.
