Former top officials at Big Bend National Park have written a letter to the federal government saying it’s possible to QUOTE “enhance border security in Big Bend National Park without destroying” what makes it a cherished landscape.
In the letter, the former park superintendents say a secure border and conserving the natural and cultural resources in Big Bend “do not have to be in conflict.” Their letter comes after the federal government waived over two dozen federal laws earlier this month to speed up construction of border barriers through Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park.
In their letter, the superintendents offer recommendations, including: removing plans for vehicle barriers since, as the former park officials say, QUOTE “there is no history, nor risk, of vehicles crossing the Rio Grande.”
The officials also ask that any water used be trucked in and not pulled from the limited water resources within the park and they also ask for the Department of Homeland Security to reconsider installing fiber optic cables and instead upgrade the existing “electronic surveillance devices” within and near the national park.

Tomorrow (TUESADY), the city of Alpine will hold their next regular city council meeting.
According to the agenda for the meeting, city council members are set to grant funding opportunities using the city’s hotel occupancy tax fund. The city will also discuss the QUOTE “development of a strategic water infrastructure plan” and consider evaluating the city’s existing wells and determining what needs repairing or replacing.
The city will also talk about the agreement with Alpine ISD over the use and repair of Manuel Payne Field.
The council meets Tuesday, June 16 at 5:30 p.m. at the city council chambers.

Then later this week, on Wednesday, June 17, the Jeff Davis County Library will host a welcoming party for the incoming library director.
The “Hail & Farewell” event will give residents an opportunity to meet the library’s new director, Jay Mann, and say goodbye to the outgoing director, Erin Ray.
The event will be June 17 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Jeff Davis County Library, located at 100 Memorial Square in Fort Davis.

At the end of the month, join the Big Bend Amateur Radio Club for Field Day, a national event where you can experience the science, skill and service behind ham radio.
From Saturday, June 27 to Sunday, June 28, head to the Double Diamond pavilion – just south of Alpine – to visit with the radio club and see some of what ham radio operators come across during emergencies and learn how to operate a ham radio too.

This is the last month (JUNE) you can take part in the “Tire Amnesty Days” hosted by the City of Alpine and Keep Alpine Beautiful.
Until the end of the month, the free event allows residents to drop off up to four tires per household per day to the recycling center.
Get rid of your scrap tires and help reduce waste by recycling your unwanted tires.
The center is not accepting commercial tires, oversized tires, or tires with rims.
“Tire Amnesty Days” continues through this month. You can drop off your unwanted tires, Wednesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The Hal Flanders Recycling Center is located at 305 Cemetery Rd.

This summer, Far West Comic Con returns to Alpine.
This year’s event includes a cosplay contest, a Magic the Gathering tournament, and special appearances by well-known voice actors–including Josh Martin, who’s known for his role on the animated series Dragonball Z.
This year’s event will be June 27 at the Alpine Civic Center. Doors open at 11:00 a.m.

Also this summer (JULY), Sul Ross State University will bring together educators, school leaders and community members for the Science of STEM Literacy Conference.
The event will go over teaching strategies, learning practices and how STEM literacy is changing in the age of artificial intelligence.
The conference will be Monday, July 13 at the Espino Conference Center at Sul Ross. The event’s free and open to educators and the public although registration is required.

Antiguos altos funcionarios del Parque Nacional Big Bend han dirigido una carta al gobierno federal afirmando que es posible —citando— “reforzar la seguridad fronteriza en el Parque Nacional Big Bend sin destruir” aquello que lo convierte en un paisaje tan apreciado.
En la misiva, los exsuperintendentes del parque señalan que contar con una frontera segura y conservar los recursos naturales y culturales de Big Bend “no tienen por qué entrar en conflicto”. Su carta se produce después de que, a principios de este mes, el gobierno federal eximiera del cumplimiento de más de dos docenas de leyes federales para agilizar la construcción de barreras fronterizas a través del Parque Nacional Big Bend y el Parque Estatal Big Bend Ranch.
En el escrito, los superintendentes ofrecen diversas recomendaciones, entre ellas: descartar los planes de instalar barreras para vehículos, dado que —según afirman los exfuncionarios— —y citando— “no existen antecedentes ni riesgo de que vehículos crucen el Río Grande”.
Asimismo, solicitan que el agua necesaria se transporte en camiones cisterna en lugar de extraerse de los limitados recursos hídricos del parque, y piden al Departamento de Seguridad Nacional que reconsidere la instalación de cables de fibra óptica y opte, en su lugar, por actualizar los “dispositivos de vigilancia electrónica” ya existentes dentro y en las inmediaciones del parque nacional.

Mañana (martes), la ciudad de Alpine celebrará su próxima reunión ordinaria del concejo municipal.
Según el orden del día, los miembros del concejo tienen previsto asignar fondos provenientes del impuesto municipal sobre la ocupación hotelera. Asimismo, se debatirá sobre el —cito textualmente— “desarrollo de un plan estratégico de infraestructura hídrica” y se considerará la evaluación de los pozos existentes en la ciudad para determinar cuáles requieren reparación o sustitución.
También se abordará el acuerdo con el Distrito Escolar Independiente de Alpine (Alpine ISD) relativo al uso y la reparación del campo Manuel Payne.
El concejo se reunirá el martes 16 de junio a las 5:30 p. m. en la sala de sesiones del concejo municipal.
