June 14th

Transcript:

Good evening, today is Tuesday, June 14th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.

The Alpine Public Library is celebrating its 75th anniversary with a “birthday party” from 5:30 to 7 Thursday evening at the Library.

The library started in 1947 when the “El Progresso Club,” now the Women’s Club of Alpine, started the library by bringing books from home.

Friends of the Alpine Public Library President Chris Ruggia said the birthday party will recognize the founders and those who have worked on it since.

Ruggia: “Cathy has been reaching out to some family members of those original founders of the library, certainly everybody in the community is invited, but most particularly, if you’ve volunteered at the library, we would love if you’d come and honor you at this party.”

There will be refreshments and light snacks with live music from new bluegrass group Calamity Creek.

There also will be door prizes with a chance to win one of two 200-dollar gift cards for those who register before the drawing at 6:30.

For more information, visit the Alpine Public Library Facebook page.

Mayor Catherine Eaves has scheduled another Meet the Mayor session from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Alpine Humane Society Thrift Store and Cattery at 706 North 5th Street.

In these sessions, citizens can discuss items that might be difficult to raise during more structured City Council Meetings.

Mayor Eaves has scheduled a discussion on Rules of Procedure and Rules of Decorum in the city Code of Ordinances for next week’s City Council meeting.

She might be asked to explain what she intends at Wednesday’s informal meeting.

Mayor Eaves is in her first term, just elected last month. The new council that came in last year has been exploring ideas for changing the way the council does business.

The Council meeting will start with a budget workshop at 5:30 next Tuesday afternoon, followed by the regular meeting at 6 in the council chambers at 803 West Holland Avenue.

Speaking of cats, Alpine Animal Services will celebrate “Adopt-A-Cat” month by reducing adoption fees to half price for the rest of June.

They encourage citizens to meet the adoptable cats and kittens currently at the Shelter at 2900 Old Marathon Highway in Alpine.

If you feel like you’ve met the perfect pet, you’ll be able to take it home for just 50 dollars. For more information call the shelter at 837-9030.

Alpine Residents who missed this month’s bulk trash pick-up can still bring bulky furniture items for free to the Hal Flanders Recycling Center during normal business hours.

The only requirement is to show proof of residence when taking bulky items from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

For more information, contact the Environmental Services offices by phone at 294-3183 or email environmental.services@ci.alpine.tx.us.

The Marathon Public Library will host auditions for children from 1st to 12th grade at 10 a.m. next Monday at the library for the play “The Frog Prince” by the Missoula Children’s Theatre.

After the auditions, rehearsals will be from 10 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 2:30 depending on the kid’s casted character.

The library will also host acting workshops Monday through Wednesday from 2:45 to 3:30 p.m.

The week will culminate with a community performance of the play at 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 24, at the library.

Martes a sábado.
