Good evening, today is Monday, June 13th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Visitation and services for Antonio “Tony” Munoz Pacheco of Marfa will be Friday and Saturday in Marfa where he died Thursday.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Church and services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Merced Cemetery with arrangements by Alpine Funeral Home.
Tony was born in Marfa on September 9, 1943, and went to school at the historic Blackwell School.
He married Patricia Miller on June 1, 1963, in Marfa and they moved to California to raise a family. In 1991, Tony met and then married Laura Fry.
He worked as a commercial painter in northern California for 35 years and was a veteran of the Vietnam War where he served in the Army.
Tony’s love for Marfa and his family brought him back to his hometown where he spent the rest of his days.
He is survived by his second wife, three children, three sisters including a twin, a brother and two grandchildren.
And funeral services are pending for Alpine native Maria Lorisa Gallego, who died early Sunday at her home.
She is preceded in death by one son. Surviving are two children, three sisters, three brothers, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Our Congressman Tony Gonzales Monday announced a million and a half dollars from the Department of Education for a grant to the Uvalde School District.
He said the money would go towards expanding mental health services, bolstering emergency transportation and increasing school safety.
Gonzales sent letters last week in support of funding under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act for Uvalde schools.
A lone gunman entered Robb Elementary School through an unlocked door May 24 and, after a 77-minute standoff, had killed 19 fourth graders and two teachers.
Project SERV funds may be used for activities that help restore safety and security for the district’s students, teachers, staff and families. They address the needs of those directly affected by the shooting and include mental health services for staff and students.
The lone Democrat seeking to unseat Gonzales for Texas Congressional District 23 will be in our area this week.
Democrat Party Chair Mary Bell Lockhart said John Lira will come to Jeff Davis, Presidio and Brewster County Thursday for a Meet and Greet in Fort Davis, Marfa and Alpine.
It will start from 8 to 10 a.m. with coffee, juice and a light breakfast at the home of Beth and Larry Francell at 109 North Buckeye in Fort Davis.
Then he travels south for a light lunch from 12 to 2 at the home of Hilary and David Beebe at 110 West Texas Street in Marfa.
That afternoon, he will participate in light snacks at West Texas Italian Deli at 801 East Holland Avenue in Alpine with hosts Paula Wilson and Anne Calaway.
Lira will face the first-term Republican Gonzales in the November 8 General Election.
When Gonzales was elected to succeed Will Hurd in 2020, it was the first time the district stayed with the same party with a change in candidates since 1985.
Two Democrats represented the district before it was redistricted by the courts in the 1990s. Henry Bonilla was the first Republican in that seat.
He was replaced by Democrat Ciro Rodriguez in 2006, who held it for two terms. Then Republican Quico Canseco and Democrat Pete Gallego each served for one term.
Then Republican Will Hurd had it for three terms and Gonzales is in his first term.
The district extends from near San Antonio almost to El Paso.
The Alpine Ambassadors have scheduled a ribbon-cutting for 10 a.m. Saturday at El Papalote, next to Robin’s Nest, at 2000 West Highway 90.
The shop had its first day Saturday offering plants and related equipment, It also offers a gift boutique and nursery selling metal art and Texas-made goods.
A drawing will be offered to Talavera handmade painted pots from Mexico and a potted plant.
The shop is open from 10 to 4 on Wednesdays and 10 to 6 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
