Julie Mae Martin Stumberg, of Alpine, passed away this week at Big Bend Regional Medical Center, surrounded by family. She was 84.
Graceful, petite, demure, reserved – these words have never been used to describe her. Instead, everyone knew Julie as vibrant, loud, bold, full of life and she was always life of the party. She never met a stranger, even when the stranger didn’t want to be met. She lived big, loved big, and her death will leave a huge hole in the lives of many.
Born in 1941, she was the 7th of 8 children. As one of the youngest, her older siblings would often try – and fail – to make her just a part of the crowd. Even as a young adult, she was the heart of her entire family. She unfailingly reached out to each family member on every birthday and Christmas, and was the hub of the family network, keeping everyone apprised of all the gossip.
She moved to Alpine in 1970 and married Steve in 1976. She enjoyed her life as a mother and rancher’s wife. She kept busy feeding the ranch hands during round ups and accompanying Steve on his daily trips to the ranch. The 50 years they spent together were a kaleidoscope of experiences and adventures that added up to a loving, devoted relationship that will survive her.
When she opened her business, Knit One, Crafts Too in 1986, it was to offer tailoring and knitting supplies to the area. In reality, it served as a place for her to keep a never-empty coffee pot and to get to know everyone who came through her door. Everyone who knew her well has received an afghan, baby blanket, or one of her other handmade symbols of love. As one of her nieces said of her, “I thank God for Uncle Julie. She’s always positive and full of grace and love.”
Julie is survived by her five children, eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be at a later date.
Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the American Lung Association or the COPD Foundation.

The suspected gunman in a shooting this (FRIDAY) morning that left at least 10 people injured and one person dead has been identified.
The Texas Department of Public Safety says 45-year-old Victor Mata Villareal began firing shots at officers and bystanders Friday morning and then barricaded himself inside an abandoned building in Midland. According to the city, the shooter is also dead.
According to the city, the shooting began around 8 this morning and the suspected gunman led law enforcement to the 4600 block of West Wall Street in Midland, where the shooter was involved in a standoff with a SWAT team.
The city of Midland said the gunman is also dead.
During a press conference this (FRIDAY) morning, mayor Lori Blong said there were few details on the shooting but an investigation is ongoing.
BLONG1: “Our goal here is to reassure you that we have strong response from our local Midland police department as well as our region, and that we’re going to be continuing to give you updates as we have confirmed details.” (0:08)
Midland Memorial Hospital said it had received nine victims from the shooting.
In a statement, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said he’s been briefed on the shooting and said the state is prepared to provide resources and support.

On Monday, Holly Blankenship will be formally sworn in as Chair of the Brewster County Democratic Party.
The public ceremony will be held at 5:00 PM in the Brewster County Commissioners Courtroom.
This marks the first change in the party’s top leadership in 15 years.

On Saturday, June 20, the City of Alpine celebrates the second annual Make Music Day, a celebration inviting everyone to make, share, and enjoy music together.
The day starts at the Alpine Visitor Center, where there will be a free harmonica workshop for beginners at 9:00 a.m. Then later in the day, the fun moves to Cow Dog, where there will be a percussion playtime. Throughout the rest of the day, there will be music at three different venues: At 5:00 p.m. at Alcove Social there will be a music circle, at Skelton’s Runway, Mariachi Santa Cruz performs at 3:00 p.m. and Wayne R. West closes out the night beginning at 8:00 p.m. Then at the Ritchey, Adam Bork and Peter Clementi take the stage at 7:00 p.m.
In a press release announcing the music celebration, Chris Ruggia, Alpine’s director of tourism, said the event is QUOTE “more about participation than performance” and that everyone’s invited to have fun and make music regardless of experience.

At the end of the month (JUNE), Frontera de Salud is coming to West Texas to provide medical services for people with limited access to health care.
Frontera de Salud, a group out of Texas Tech, will provide blood pressure and glucose screenings, school physicals, women’s health exams, ultrasounds, EKGs, and general check-ups.
Walk-ins are welcome, and the services are free.
The first clinic is Saturday, June 27 at the Fort Davis Community Center from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. The group will then head to Presidio on June 28, where they’ll be at the PCHS clinic from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Then on Monday, June 29 the group will be in Alpine at the Sunshine House from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The final clinic will be in Valentine on June 30 at 100 Bell Street, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Next month (JULY), head to the Brewster County Courthouse for a blue-ribbon cook off as part of the city’s annual Fourth of July celebration.
The daylong fun starts at 10:00 a.m. with a parade and the celebration continues at the courthouse lawn beginning at 10:30 a.m. There you can enter into the blue-ribbon cook off competition. The categories are “best baked good” and “preserved perfection.” The competitions are free to enter. The turn in time for baked goods is 11:00 a.m. with judging at 11:30 a.m. The turn in time for a preserved dish is noon with judging at 12:30 p.m.
The awards ceremony for the cook off will be at 1:00 p.m.

This summer, the city of Alpine will host a regional roundtable for the group Texas Downtown.
The event will bring together downtown leaders and officials from the El Paso area and throughout the Big Bend for two days of learning, networking and celebrating downtown revitalization.
The event will be July 9 and 10 at the Museum of the Big Bend and the Granada Theatre.

Julie Mae Martin Stumberg, residente de Alpine, falleció esta semana en el Big Bend Regional Medical Center, rodeada de su familia. Tenía 84 años.
Elegante, menuda, recatada, reservada… estas palabras nunca se usaron para describirla. Por el contrario, todos conocían a Julie como una mujer vibrante, ruidosa, audaz y llena de vida; siempre era el alma de la fiesta. Para ella no existían los desconocidos, ni siquiera cuando la otra persona no quería ser conocida. Vivió con intensidad, amó profundamente y su muerte dejará un gran vacío en la vida de muchos.
Nacida en 1941, fue la séptima de ocho hermanos. Al ser una de las menores, sus hermanos mayores a menudo intentaban —sin éxito— hacer que pasara desapercibida entre la multitud. Incluso ya adulta, seguía siendo el corazón de toda la familia. Nunca olvidaba felicitar a cada miembro de la familia en cumpleaños y Navidades, y era el eje de la red familiar, manteniendo a todos al tanto de los últimos chismes.
Se mudó a Alpine en 1970 y se casó con Steve en 1976. Disfrutaba de su vida como madre y esposa de ganadero. Se mantenía ocupada alimentando a los trabajadores del rancho durante las faenas de rodeo y acompañando a Steve en sus viajes diarios al rancho. Los 50 años que pasaron juntos fueron un caleidoscopio de experiencias y aventuras que dieron forma a una relación amorosa y dedicada que perdurará más allá de su partida.
A Julie le sobreviven sus cinco hijos, ocho nietos y siete bisnietos.
Más adelante se celebrará un servicio conmemorativo privado.

Se ha identificado al presunto autor de los disparos en un tiroteo ocurrido esta mañana (viernes) que dejó al menos 10 personas heridas y una fallecida.
El Departamento de Seguridad Pública de Texas informa que Victor Mata Villareal, de 45 años, comenzó a disparar contra agentes y transeúntes el viernes por la mañana y posteriormente se atrincheró en un edificio abandonado en Midland. Según las autoridades municipales, el atacante también ha fallecido.
Durante una conferencia de prensa celebrada este viernes por la mañana, la alcaldesa Lori Blong señaló que había pocos detalles sobre el tiroteo, pero que la investigación está en curso.

A finales de este mes (junio), Frontera de Salud visitará el oeste de Texas para ofrecer servicios médicos a personas con acceso limitado a la atención sanitaria.
Frontera de Salud, un grupo vinculado a Texas Tech, realizará pruebas de presión arterial y glucosa, exámenes físicos escolares, revisiones de salud para la mujer, ecografías, electrocardiogramas y chequeos generales.
Se atenderá a las personas sin necesidad de cita previa y los servicios serán gratuitos.
La primera clínica tendrá lugar el sábado 27 de junio en el Centro Comunitario de Fort Davis (Fort Davis Community Center), de 1:00 p. m. a 6:00 p. m. Posteriormente, el grupo se trasladará a Presidio el 28 de junio, donde atenderá en la clínica PCHS de 10:00 a. m. a 4:00 p. m.
El lunes 29 de junio, el grupo estará en Alpine, en el centro Sunshine House, de 9:00 a. m. a 3:00 p. m. La última clínica se llevará a cabo en Valentine el 30 de junio, en el número 100 de Bell Street, de 10:00 a. m. a 4:00 p. m.

El próximo mes (julio), diríjase al Palacio de Justicia del Condado de Brewster para participar en un concurso culinario de primer nivel, como parte de la celebración anual del 4 de julio de la ciudad.
La jornada de diversión comienza a las 10:00 a. m. con un desfile, y la celebración continúa en la explanada del palacio de justicia a partir de las 10:30 a. m. Allí podrá inscribirse en el concurso culinario. Las categorías son “mejor producto de repostería” y “conservas perfectas”. La participación en los concursos es gratuita. La hora de entrega para los productos de repostería es a las 11:00 a. m., y la evaluación se realizará a las 11:30 a. m. La hora de entrega para las conservas es al mediodía, con la evaluación a las 12:30 p. m. La ceremonia de premiación del concurso tendrá lugar a la 1:00 p. m.

Este verano, la ciudad de Alpine será sede de una mesa redonda regional para el grupo Texas Downtown.
