Last night, the Alpine City Council voted to accept the city manager’s resignation and to appoint an interim city manager.
After a lengthy executive session, the council reconvened and unanimously accepted Megan Antrim’s resignation. Antrim, who had been with the city for nearly three years, put in her notice from the city manager role last week.
During the council meeting, the council also voted to appoint city secretary Geo Calderon as the interim city manager.
Mayor Catherine Eaves said quote:
“City secretary, council voted – with council member Portillo, council member Martinez, council member Rückes, council member Escovedo in favor of having Geo being the interim city manager and council member Stephens voting nay – with that council or, city secretary you will be the interim city manager. We would like you to train with Megan immediately.”
The council will consider Calderon’s stipend as interim city manager at the next council meeting on June 17.

The Big Bend Chamber of Commerce hosts its monthly meeting tomorrow at the Red Pattillo community center in Terlingua.
The meeting starts at 6 p.m. and all are encouraged to attend.

Next week, the Sul Ross Department of Visual and Performing Arts presents the musical “Next to Normal.”
The show tells the story of a suburban mother who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder brought on by a past family trauma. Her family struggles to cope with her condition and their own mental health.
In an interview with KVLF, Olivia Pertuso – one of the actors in the play and an adjunct professor at Sul Ross – said acting opens up a world of possibilities.
PERTUSO1: “And yeah, also the whole exchange between audience and actors is so special. It’s such a cool experience you can’t really get from anything else that’s so awesome and different every night and so exciting every time too. And I have just learned so much about myself and life from doing acting.” (0:18)
The musical opens Friday, June 20 starting at 7:30 p.m. with following performances are Saturday and Sunday.
Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for seniors and children. Admission is free for veterans.

The Brewster County Groundwater Conservation District holds its regular meeting next week.
Among other items on the agenda is a discussion and potential action related to newly ordered monitoring equipment and where to install it.
The conservation district, which manages groundwater resources in the county, meets on Thursday, June 19.

Next month, Sul Ross State University will host its second annual “Science of STEM literacy conference” at the Museum of the Big Bend.
The professional development event is free and open to all educators. The general public is also welcome to attend and lunch will be provided.
The conference covers STEM teaching strategies and highlights ways to enhance learning outcomes in STEM. The one-day event includes breakout sessions on dark skies, classroom safety in science labs and project-based learning.

This summer, the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute will hold a BBQ and auction fundraiser.
The event happens Saturday, August 9 at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center and Botanical Gardens. Doors open at 3:45 followed by a live and silent auction, a BBQ dinner and live music.

Anoche, el Ayuntamiento de Alpine votó a favor de aceptar la renuncia del administrador municipal y nombrar a un administrador municipal interino.
Tras una larga sesión ejecutiva, el consejo volvió a reunirse y aceptó por unanimidad la renuncia de Megan Antrim. Antrim, quien llevaba casi tres años en la ciudad, presentó su renuncia al cargo de administradora municipal la semana pasada.
Durante la reunión del consejo, el consejo también votó a favor de nombrar a la secretaria municipal, Geo Calderón, como administradora municipal interina.
La alcaldesa Catherine Eaves dijo:
“Secretario municipal, el consejo votó —con los concejales Portillo, Martínez, Rückes y Escovedo a favor de que Geo sea el administrador municipal interino y el concejal Stephens votando en contra—, con esa decisión, el consejo o el secretario municipal, usted será el administrador municipal interino. Nos gustaría que se entrene con Megan inmediatamente”.
El consejo considerará el estipendio de Calderón como administradora municipal interina en la próxima reunión del consejo, el 17 de junio.
