The New World screwworm, a parasitic fly that wreaked havoc on Texas’ agriculture industry decades ago has worked its way through Mexico but hasn’t reached the Lone Star State.
While the screwworm hasn’t been found in Texas, agricultural officials say it’s important to stay vigilant.
Terry Hensley is a veterinarian with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. He spoke yesterday (MONDAY) during a webinar on the insect.
“This is gonna be a problem for all Texas, and we all need to take heed and be involved in it. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a landowner, an outdoor enthusiast, you’re a hunter, you’re a hiker, birdwatcher, bike rider, wildlife manager – it doesn’t really matter, it’s a problem for all of us.” (0:22)
Hensley says if you think you’ve seen a screwworm or have livestock that may have been affected by one, report it.
For decades the parasitic fly has been contained at the border of Panama and Colombia, but moved beyond that barrier in 2022.

During a Brewster County commissioners court meeting today, officials approved adding all of the 120 hiking trails within Big Bend National Park to the county’s 9-1-1 mapping system.
Kayse Muratori is leading the efforts to improve addressing across the tri-county area.
She told commissioner’s that adding the hiking trails is important for visitor safety.
MURATORI1: “If you’re in the park and you call 911, you don’t get a park ranger, you get dispatched up here at Brewster County Sheriff’s Office. Okay, so that dispatch needs to understand the location in order to tell the park ranger where to go.” (0:12)
Muratori says the addition of the trails is QUOTE “a big deal” for Big Bend National Park.

This weekend, a nationwide demonstration planned in hundreds of cities across the U.S. will reach Far West Texas.
On Saturday, June 14 – two so-called “No Kings” protests will happen – one in Alpine and another in Fort Davis. June 14 is Flag Day, and President Donald Trump’s birthday, which will see a military parade in Washington.
The local demonstrations are sponsored by county Democratic parties in Brewster, Presidio, and Jeff Davis counties, in partnership with the nationwide organization, Indivisible.
According to an announcement for the events, the group says they believe Flag Day is an appropriate day for the demonstration since QUOTE “protesters are acting in support of our flag, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the rule of law, our democracy, and our veterans.”
The Alpine event will take place at the Brewster County Courthouse from noon to 2 p.m. And the Fort Davis protest will take place across from the Limpia Hotel, from 5 p.m, to 6:30.

The Cemetery Association in Fort Davis will hold a meeting later this month to talk about the future of the site.
On June 26 at 5:30 p.m., the group will meet at the Saint Joseph Parish Hall. The discussion will include plans to improve cemetery procedures. The event is open to the public.

El gusano barrenador del Nuevo Mundo, una mosca parásita que causó estragos en la industria agrícola de Texas hace décadas, se ha expandido por México, pero no ha llegado al Estado de la Estrella Solitaria.
Si bien no se ha detectado en Texas, las autoridades agrícolas afirman que es importante mantenerse alerta.
Terry Hensley, veterinario del Servicio de Extensión AgriLife de Texas A&M, habló ayer durante un seminario web sobre el insecto. y menciono que “Esto será un problema para todo Texas, y todos debemos estar atentos y participar. No importa si es terrateniente, aficionado a las actividades al aire libre, cazador, excursionista, observador de aves, ciclista o administrador de vida silvestre; en realidad no importa, es un problema para todos”.
Hensley recomienda que si cree haber visto un gusano barrenador o tiene ganado que pueda haber sido afectado por uno, repórtarlo.
Durante décadas, la mosca parásita estuvo contenida en la frontera de Panamá y Colombia, pero en el 2022 superó esa barrera.

Durante una reunión de hoy en la corte de comisionados del Condado de Brewster, los funcionarios aprobaron la incorporación de las 120 rutas de senderismo del Parque Nacional Big Bend al sistema de mapeo 9-1-1 del condado.
Kayse Muratori lidera las iniciativas para mejorar la ubicación de los senderos en el área de los tres condados.
Explicó a los comisionados que la incorporación de las rutas de senderismo es importante para la seguridad de los visitantes.
“Si está en el parque y llama al 911, no le atiende un guardabosques, sino que lo envían aquí, a la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Brewster. Entonces ese despacho necesita conocer la ubicación para poder indicarle al guardabosques adónde ir.
Muratori afirma que la incorporación de los senderos es, según se indica, “un gran logro” para el Parque Nacional Big Bend.

Este fin de semana, una manifestación nacional planeada en cientos de ciudades de Estados Unidos llegará al extremo oeste de Texas.
El sábado 14 de junio se llevarán a cabo dos protestas denominadas “Sin Reyes”: una en Alpine y otra en Fort Davis. El 14 de junio es el Día de la Bandera y el cumpleaños del presidente Donald Trump, y se realizará un desfile militar en Washington.
Las manifestaciones locales están patrocinadas por los partidos demócratas de los condados de Brewster, Presidio y Jeff Davis, en colaboración con la organización nacional Indivisible.
Según un anuncio de los eventos, el grupo afirma que cree que el Día de la Bandera es un día apropiado para la manifestación, ya que “los manifestantes actúan en apoyo de nuestra bandera, la Constitución, la Declaración de Derechos, el estado de derecho, nuestra democracia y nuestros veteranos”.
El evento de Alpine tendrá lugar en el Palacio de Justicia del Condado de Brewster desde el mediodía hasta las 2 p. m. Y la protesta de Fort Davis tendrá lugar frente al Hotel Limpia desde las 5 p. m. hasta las 6:30 p. m.

La Asociación de Cementerios de Fort Davis se reunirá a finales de este mes para hablar sobre el futuro del lugar.
El 26 de junio a las 5:30, el grupo se reunirá en el Salón Parroquial de San José. Se tratarán planes para mejorar los procedimientos del cementerio. El evento está abierto al público.
