Big Bend Regional Hospital District will host a free community health fair from 10 to 3 Saturday next week at the Alpine Civic Center.
Local service providers from across the region will have booths and activities to educate the public on local resources and services.
Health Fair attendees and participants will have a chance to win door prizes from event sponsors.
Rio Grande COG Aging Services will be at 11, a general overview of Medicare benefits and Area Agency on Aging Services.
At noon, Sun City Dieticians will present “Let’s Get Cooking,” a demonstration on healthy cooking.
Deaf and hard-of-hearing services with amplified and captioned phones will be at 1 while-life wellness through stem cell therapy will be at 2.
Covid vaccinations will be available throughout the day from Highland Drug and the Prescription Shop will collect and dispose of expired or unneeded prescription medications.
Big Bend Regional Health Clinic will provide free health screenings and glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol checks and the Alpine Lion’s Club will provide vision screenings.

Carolyn and Benjamin Barrientes will debut their play “Jesus y la Tamalera,” at this weekend’s multicultural festival at Kokernot Park at 3 p.m. Saturday and 6:45 Sunday.
Carolyn said the play aims to promote a reflection on people and cultural traditions through a “Tamalada.”
Carolyn: “The Process of a Tamalada is when people sit around a table and just exchange stories and the culture of these stories is unique and people can identify with a lot of these things that are going on, so I think that’ll bring it together.”
Benjamin wrote the screenplay while Carolyn directed, which Carolyn said brought new challenges to the couple.
Carolyn: “There were times where there was a little tension but it was also just a learning experience for both us and working with these individuals. These students have been a really great blessing because they have taught us as well.”
A mix of eight Sul Ross students from freshmen to juniors will perform both shows this weekend.
Together Carolyn said the impact of the play will be in line with the multicultural theme of the festival by performing the bilingual play.
Carolyn: “As a Hispanic-serving institution we’re wanting to showcase their talents for the community. Bringing them together and having them present this piece has been a wonderful experience for all of us because it’s a bilingual piece and we want to reach out to the community especially.”
Our Congressman Tony Gonzales has led a group of House colleagues to introduce a resolution honoring the 21 lives lost during a mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde.
He said it is devastating to see innocent students and teachers become victims of a senseless act of violence.
Among those joining him were Henry Cuellar, Michael McCaul, Michael Burgess, Louie Gohmert, Dan Crenshaw, Pete Sessions and August Pfluger.
To celebrate its 75th anniversary, the Alpine Public Library is extending debt forgiveness throughout June for all who are missing books, DVDs and audiobooks.
Sul Ross State University is kicking off summer with the first ever “Caving Across STEM” Middle School Camp Monday and Tuesday.
Noyce Scholars and Mentors along with Sul Ross education geology, math and science professors will teach students throughout the camp.
The program is a partnership with Noyce en la Frontera, which aims to increase the pipeline of highly-qualified STEM teachers by ten percent.
The acronym stands for Science, Math, Engineering and Technology.
