Samuel Fierro – a beloved husband, father, and grandfather – has passed away. He was 71.
Samuel, who was born in Alpine, was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps. His journey in life led him to meet Annabelle Sotelo, whom he married and was blessed with over 45 years of marriage. Together, they became the proud parents of Omar Samuel Fierro and Naomi Ann Sanchez.
Samuel had a passion for golf and football and was an avid fan of the 49ers. And he relished being a grandfather and loved his grandchildren dearly.
He leaves behind many memories that will remain with his beloved wife, Annabelle, and the rest of his family. Samuel’s legacy will live on not only through his children but also his three grandchildren. He will also be remembered by his two brothers and his sister. Samuel is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass in honor of Samuel will be held next Saturday, June 6 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Alpine, with burial to follow at Holy Angels Cemetery.

The city of Alpine has lowered water restrictions again, this time moving to Stage 1 restrictions.
In a press release announcing the change, the city says the decision comes as there have been significant improvements in the stability of Alpine’s water distribution system and water storage levels.
The city has also started drilling a new municipal water well, and once complete officials say it will provide additional production capacity and further improve the city’s water system.
Under stage 1 water restrictions, the city asks people and businesses to limit irrigation to Sundays and Thursdays for even numbered addresses and Saturdays and Wednesdays for odd-numbered addresses. The city also asks you to check for leaks, dripping faucets, running toilets and to conserve water whenever possible

Next weekend, the Museum of the Big Bend at Sul Ross State University will celebrate Alpine Photo weekend.
The two-day event kicks off Friday, June 12 with the opening reception for “Quaerite et Invenietis” (KWAR-eh-teh et in-vehn-EE-tis), a show by acclaimed photographer Bobby Greeson. His striking images will take you into the worlds of the White Mountains in California and the Antelope Canyon in Arizona. The reception for Greeson’s show will be 5 to 7 p.m.
Then on Saturday, June 13, the museum will host a full day of free presentations, workshops and photography activities from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The events are designed for photographers of all skill levels.

This summer, Far West Comic Con returns to Alpine.
This year’s event includes a cosplay contest, a Magic the Gathering tournament, and special appearances by well-known voice actors–including Josh Martin, who’s known for his role on the animated series Dragonball Z.
This year’s event will be June 27 at the Alpine Civic Center. Doors open at 11:00 a.m.

And later this summer (JULY), Sul Ross State University will bring together educators, school leaders and community members for the Science of STEM Literacy Conference.
The event will go over teaching strategies, learning practices and how STEM literacy is changing in the age of artificial intelligence.
The conference will be Monday, July 13 at the Espino Conference Center at Sul Ross. The event’s free and open to educators and the public although registration is required.

Samuel Fierro —un amado esposo, padre y abuelo— ha fallecido. Tenía 71 años.
Samuel, quien nació en Alpine, fue un orgulloso veterano del Cuerpo de Marines de los Estados Unidos. Su camino en la vida lo llevó a conocer a Annabelle Sotelo, con quien contrajo matrimonio y con quien tuvo la bendición de compartir más de 45 años de vida conyugal. Juntos, se convirtieron en los orgullosos padres de Omar Samuel Fierro y Naomi Ann Sanchez.
Samuel sentía pasión por el golf y el fútbol americano, y era un ferviente seguidor de los 49ers. Asimismo, disfrutaba enormemente de su papel como abuelo y amaba entrañablemente a sus nietos.
Deja tras de sí numerosos recuerdos que perdurarán en la memoria de su amada esposa, Annabelle, y del resto de su familia. El legado de Samuel perdurará no solo a través de sus hijos, sino también de sus tres nietos. También será recordado por sus dos hermanos y su hermana. La ciudad de Alpine ha vuelto a reducir las restricciones de agua; en esta ocasión, ha pasado a aplicar las restricciones de la Etapa 1.
