In Marathon, the town’s library has just been awarded a grant that will see the rural West Texas library add more than 100 new books to its collection.
Carlos Morales reports the grant comes as the library has moved into a new space.
The Marathon Public Library is one of just 50 libraries across the state to receive a grant this year – and it will allow them to purchase dozens of nonfiction books for both children and adults.
Dara Cavness is the library director. She says as the library was moving into their new space, they realized some of their nonfiction offerings were a bit….outdated.
CAVNESS1: “We were looking at them, and some of them, we looked at and we’re like ‘These things don’t even apply to modern day life.” (0:08)
From there, Cavness says her team made a “wish list” of books they wanted, saw the grant application and applied.
She says the library was just in desperate need — and with the move into a new space, it only felt right to have new books too.
CAVNESS2: That’s just the start because we’ve put in our budget. We’re going to really expand our collection, but that’s our start. That is our start.” (0:09)
The library’s new space, which is already open to the public, has been an effort years in the making.
Cavness says they’re hosting a grand opening celebration on November 6.

Later this week, the Alpine Public Library will be hosting a Civilian Response to Active Shooter Event – or CRASE class. The one-day training will be July 12 at 10 a.m. The class is free and registration is required.

The Sul Ross Ag and rodeo annual fundraiser and reunion will be July 18 through the 20.
The events kick off Friday, July 18 with a 42 tournament at1 p.m. at Skelton’s Runway, located at 300 S. Cockrell St. in Alpine. That day there will also be a social, goat roping and corn hole.
The reunion continues on Saturday with team roping at the SALE Arena, a poker tournament and an award presentation and silent auction, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Sul Ross.
The final day of the annual celebration features a golf tournament and a playday.

Next week, the National Parks Conservation Association will unveil the Blackwell Blueprint, a community-driven vision for the future of Blackwell School National Historic Site.
The document came together through a series of community discussions centered on the historic site, which was just one of many segregated schools across the southwest where Hispanic and white children were taught separately.
The event will take place Saturday, July 19 at the USO Building in Marfa from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Next month, the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute will hold its annual BBQ and auction fundraiser.
The event happens Saturday, August 9 at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center and Botanical Gardens. Doors open at 3:45 followed by a live and silent auction, a BBQ dinner and live music.

En Marathon, la biblioteca del pueblo acaba de recibir una subvención que permitirá a esta biblioteca rural del oeste de Texas añadir más de 100 libros nuevos a su colección.
La Biblioteca Pública de Marathon es una de las 50 bibliotecas del estado que han recibido una subvención este año, la cual les permitirá adquirir docenas de libros de no ficción para niños y adultos.
Dara Cavness, directora de la biblioteca, comenta que, mientras la biblioteca se mudaba a su nuevo espacio, se dieron cuenta de que algunos de sus libros de no ficción estaban un poco… anticuados.
Cito: “Los estábamos analizando, y algunos, al revisarlos, pensamos: ‘Esto ni siquiera aplica a la vida moderna’”.
A partir de ahí, Cavness comenta que su equipo hizo una lista de deseos con los libros que querían, vieron la solicitud de subvención y la solicitaron.
Asegura que la biblioteca tenía una necesidad desesperada, y con la mudanza a un nuevo espacio, les pareció apropiado tener también libros nuevos.
menciono tambien que esto es solo el comienzo, porque ya han asignado nuestro presupuesto. Van a ampliar mucho su colección, pero ese su comienzo.
El nuevo espacio de la biblioteca, que ya está abierto al público, ha sido un esfuerzo de años.
Cavness dice que celebrarán la gran inauguración el 6 de noviembre.

A finales de esta semana, la Biblioteca Pública de Alpine organizará un evento de Respuesta Civil ante Tiradores Activos (CRASE). La capacitación, de un día de duración, tendrá lugar el 12 de julio a las 10:00 a. m. La clase es gratuita y es necesario registrarse.

La recaudación de fondos y reunión anual de Sul Ross Ag and Rodeo se llevará a cabo del 18 al 20 de julio.

La próxima semana, la Asociación de Conservación de Parques Nacionales presentará el Plan Blackwell, una visión comunitaria para el futuro del Sitio Histórico Nacional de la Escuela Blackwell.
El documento se elaboró a través de una serie de debates comunitarios centrados en el sitio histórico, que era solo una de las muchas escuelas segregadas del suroeste, donde los niños hispanos y blancos recibían clases por separado.
