Starting tomorrow (FRIDAY), celebrate Big Bend Black Bears weekend in Alpine. The two-day event starts August 1 at 5th Street Gallery, where artist Chris Ruggia will showcase his original bear paintings and drawings from 5 to 7 p.m.
Then on Saturday, at 2 p.m. head to Front Street Books for a talk on the latest research from the Borderlands Research Institute.
As part of the events, Chris is giving away a limited edition painting – to enter, visit his website chrisruggia.com.

Tomorrow night (Friday night), the Big Bend Arts Council will host a reception for its next show – “Clay Works.”
The opening is from 5 p.m. to 7 at Big Bend Gallery, located at 121 West Holland Ave in Alpine.
The show runs through September 9th.

Next week, the Alpine City Council meets. And during the meeting, council members will discuss the next steps for hiring a permanent city manager. The agenda for Tuesday’s meeting, shows the council will outline the plan for interviews. There are several candidates up for consideration.
The council will also receive the usual department updates, including a report from the director of tourism.
The council meets Tuesday, August 5 at 5:30.

Next weekend, the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute will hold its annual BBQ and auction fundraiser.
The event happens Saturday, August 9 at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center and Botanical Gardens. Doors open at 3:45 followed by a live and silent auction, a BBQ dinner and live music.

In August (Later this month), two nonprofits are coming together to host a free pet clinic in Terlingua, where they’ll spay, neuter, microchip and vaccinate your pets.
The event, hosted by the Alpine Humane Society and Operation Kindness, will offe surgical and wellness services at no charge and heartworm tests and flea and tick products will have a nominal fee.
The groups are looking for assistance with the event – they need donations to help subsidize the services, lodging for 11 volunteers, meals, and help bringing kennels and supplies from Alpine to Terlingua and back.
They’re also looking for ice, water and cold drinks and help with advertising.

Tickets are now on sale for the 10 year anniversary celebration of the TejanoSundays radio show.
The $20 ticket gets you a full day of fun including a cornhole tournament, carshow, venders and music – featuring La Tropa F, the Puro Party All-Starz and DJs.
The event takes place August 16 at Skelton’s Runway.

El evento tendrá lugar el sábado 9 de agosto en el Centro de Naturaleza y Jardín Botánico del Desierto Chihuahuense. Las puertas abren a las 3:45 p. m., seguidas de una subasta silenciosa en vivo, una cena bbq y música en vivo.
