For the third week in a row, Texas has not confirmed any new measles cases linked to the West Texas outbreak.
According to Texas Public Radio, the total number of known infections since the outbreak started in West Texas back in January stands at 762. The state says an outbreak is considered over if there are no new cases reported in 42 consecutive days. A top official with the Texas Department of State Health Services told Texas Public Radio that it appears the height of the outbreak is QUOTE “behind us.”
But he also warns that people should still remain cautious.
As of this week, Lamar County is the only Texas county in the state that’s still considered to be in an active measles outbreak.

The National Political Science Honors Society at Sul Ross State University has received national recognition among the society’s chapters across the U.S.
According to the Alpine university, the recognition is awarded to chapters of Pi Sigma Alpha that embody the society’s mission to stimulate scholarship and intellectual interest in political science. The recognition includes a cash prize of $500 for the chapter, as well as an additional $200 to the advisor for their service.
The Omicron Phi chapter at SRSU was chartered in 1986 and has inducted more than 292 students.

Registration is now open for the next Texas Master Naturalist program.
The first session for new members will be next month – on Saturday, August 23, at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center. The first class will focus on understanding the geological and biological events that have resulted in the Big Bend ecosystems we see today.

All next week, the city of Alpine will host its monthly bulk pick up.
Residents looking to schedule a pickup for next week, but do so by Friday, August 1 before 12 p.m. To schedule your pickup call Texas Disposal Systems at 432-837-0845.
According to the city, each household is limited to five items or three cubic yards worth of items. Once the pick-up has been scheduled, place your bulk items on the curb or right of way directly in front of your home.
The city advises residents to not put anything out onto the roadway, in an alley, or next to a dumpster.

Next week, several churches in Alpine are coming together to host a backyard bible club at Kokernot Park.
From August 4 to August 7, Hillside Baptist Church, First Baptist Church and Fuenta de Vida Assembly Church welcome boys and girls, in kindergarten through 5th grade, to head to the park for daily bible lessons. Each morning will begin at 9 a.m. and run to noon.
The theme for this year’s event is “magnified” – there will be music, bible stories and puppet shows.
Pizza and lemonade will be provided for all Backyard Bible Club participants and their parents along with a short program of music and Bible verses. There is no charge. For more information, or to pre-register your child or children, call Karen McGuire at 432-386-3071.

Next weekend, the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute will hold its annual BBQ and auction fundraiser.
The event happens Saturday, August 9 at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center and Botanical Gardens. Doors open at 3:45 followed by a live and silent auction, a BBQ dinner and live music.
