Independence Day celebrations will continue throughout the day tomorrow (SATURDAY) and into the rest of the weekend.
The daylong celebrations in Alpine kick off tomorrow (SATURDAY) with the annual Fourth of July Parade beginning at 10:00 a.m. The route will wind through the town, starting at Kokernot Park then heading down 5th Street and ultimately ending at the courthouse. And at the courthouse there will be a blue-ribbon cook off competition. The categories are “best baked good” and “preserved perfection.” The competitions are free to enter. The turn in time for baked goods is 11:00 a.m. with judging at 11:30 a.m. The turn in time for a preserved dish is noon with judging at 12:30 p.m.
The awards ceremony for the cook off will be at 1:00 p.m. And there will be plenty of entertainment throughout the day and the Fourth celebrations culminate tomorrow night (SATURDAY) with fireworks at Kokernot Park at 9:30 p.m.
Over in Fort Davis, there will be live music through Saturday afternoon and evening, ending with A-Train and the Texicanos from 10:00 p.m. to midnight at the Kelly Pavillion.

And the Fourth of July celebrations don’t end tomorrow (SATURDAY), they’ll continue on Sunday.
In Fort Davis there will be an 1880s baseball game at Fort Davis National Historic Site beginning at 2:00 p.m. And later that evening, head to the First Presbyterian Church in Marf where there will be live music and food.
For this year’s celebration, the church is welcoming back local favorites, The Last Call Band, to fill the air with the country-western covers you know and love.
The concert will be Sunday, July 5 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Next week, the city of Alpine will hold its next council meeting.
According to an agenda for the meeting, council members are set to approve a resolution appointing Clarinda Espinoza as the interim city secretary. They’ll also discuss and potentially approve of an agreement with Alpine ISD over the use and management Manual Payne Field.
The city council meets Tuesday, July 7 at 5:30 p.m.

Next week, head to Front Street Books for a talk and book signing with Jason Stone, author of the book The Beauty of Days Gone By.
The book is a modern western novel about European ranchers.
The event begins at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 9 with a meet and greet. Then afterwards, Alpine Historical Association board member and historian Matt Walker will lead an interview with Stone about the novel. The event will conclude with a book signing.
Stone grew up in West Texas – and The Beauty of Days Gone By is his debut novel.

Later this month (JULY), Big Bend Radio will host a blood drive at their studios in Alpine.

Next week, the nonprofit Historic Alpine invites the public to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Archives of the Big Bend at Sul Ross State University.
The anniversary celebration will include an evening of conversation, refreshments, historic displays, and shared memories as the group honors the Archives of the Big Bend and the people who have helped preserve the region’s history.
The celebration is July 10 starting at 6:00 p.m. at the Bryan Wildenthal Memorial Library on the Sul Ros campus.

Los festejos en Alpine comenzarán mañana (sábado) con el desfile anual del 4 de julio, que iniciará a las 10:00 a. m. El recorrido atravesará la localidad: comenzará en el parque Kokernot, seguirá por la calle 5th Street y finalizará en el edificio del tribunal (*courthouse*). Allí mismo se llevará a cabo un concurso de cocina. Las categorías son “mejor producto de repostería” y “conservas perfectas”. La participación en los concursos es gratuita. La hora de entrega para los productos de repostería es a las 11:00 a. m., y la evaluación se realizará a las 11:30 a. m. Para las conservas, la entrega será al mediodía y la evaluación a las 12:30 p. m.
La ceremonia de premiación del concurso tendrá lugar a la 1:00 p. m. Habrá diversas opciones de entretenimiento durante todo el día, y las celebraciones del 4 de julio culminarán mañana por la noche (sábado) con un espectáculo de fuegos artificiales en el parque Kokernot a las 9:30 p. m.
