The Texas Department of Transportation has announced that construction crews will work soon on Highway 118 from the intersection with Avenue E to the Jeff Davis County line.
Work will begin August 5 and continue for about a year.
The project will include milling, asphalt overlay, new pavement and markings, signs, metal beam guard fence replacement and new curb ramps.
Construction crews will work during the day and some night hours. Motorists should follow posted signage and flaggers during construction.
The Working Group of the Alpine Business Alliance will meet Tuesday evening in the Alpine Sunshine House to discuss whether to revive the old Chamber of Commerce and other issues.
The existing Chamber folded several years ago and the city withdrew all support when the then paid manager was caught taking from its bank account.
In a string of emails, A.B.A. members discussed economic problems brought about by the Covid Pandemic.
The problem was severely complicated later when a major fire destroyed a large percentage of the 100 block of West Holland Avenue and put five merchants out of business.
It was in the Forcheimer Building that was totally destroyed and its owner Bill Ivey lost that part of his business.

The 2024 Big Bend Ranch Rodeo by the Working Ranch Cowboys Association is coming up August 9 and 10 at the Sul Ross State University SALE Arena.
It is sponsored by Hunter Industries and Flying W. Ranches
Adult Performances will be at 7 p.m. August 9 and 10 and a Youth Performance for kids and teens will be at 11 on August 10. Tickets are 10 dollars each with children 12 and younger free.
Tickets will be sold at the gate before each performance with no presale or online sale of tickets.

The West of the Pecos Republican Women’s Club offers Run-N-Gun event by women for women only, a two-gun format next month in the mountains of Brewster County.
The grand prize is a Watchtower Firearms customized B.D.R. 15 3G with a polished green finish.
The fee to enter the event is 200 dollars, which includes a souvenir T-shirt, breakfast, lunch and dinner.
It will be August 24 and the deadline to enter is August 1.

The Alpine Lady Bucks Volleyball team will have a program meeting at 6:30 Wednesday in the Alpine High School cafeteria. Topics of discussion include the two-day tryout guidelines and expectations and program guidelines and expectations.
