Texans are sounding off on the legislature’s plan to redraw the state’s congressional map.
Earlier today (TUESDAY), during a public hearing, people from West Texas and beyond weighed in on the rare, mid-decade redistricting effort.
During the hearing, people from across West Texas and the rest of the state BOTH backed the redistricting efforts and condemned them.
Nina Perales is a lawyer with MALDEF, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund. She told the Senate Committee on Congressional Redistricting that Texans should be able to see a map of the proposed revisions – which so far have not been released.
PERALES1: If the legislature’s going to consider and vote on a new congressional redistricting plan in this special session, a draft of that map has to be almost done. And you should insist on being a part of that process – as it occurs, not just after someone hands you a completed map.” (0:18)
State lawmakers say follow-up public hearings will be scheduled once maps are filed.
The unusual mid-decade effort to redraw congressional maps after pressure from President Donald Trump,, who wants to boost the GOP’s slim majority in the U.S. House ahead of midterm elections next year.

In just a few days, celebrate Big Bend Black Bears weekend in Alpine. The two-day event starts Friday, August 1 at 5th Street Gallery, where artist Chris Ruggia will showcase his original bear paintings and drawings from 5 to 7 p.m.
In an interview with KVLF, Ruggia said some of the art he’ll be showing was made during an artist residency at Big Bend National Park.
RUGGIA1: “I’ve got two particular paintings of black bears that came out of my residency, my artist residency in Big Bend National Park last summer. And then there’s seven black-and-white drawings of black bears that were in the book that I released a while back. So this will be the original drawings and prints of those drawings that I’ll be displaying. And all of that work was really directly inspired by Borderlands Research Institute – their bear projects.”
And the next day, on Saturday, researchers will go over those projects and what they’ve been able to find out about blear bears in the Big Bend.
RUGGIA2: “Texas Parks and Wildlife, they fund that research, partly, at Borderlands Research Institute, so they can learn what are the bears doing and what are the best ways to manage our homes so that they’re not attractive to the bears.”

This weekend, ahead of the start of school, there will be a back-to-school drive in Fort Davis. Organizers are currently looking for donations of backpacks and school supplies. Donations can be left at the Chamber and Visitor Center office.
The back-to-school drive takes place Sunday, August. 3, from 3:00 p.m. to 5.

And in Marfa, Big Bend Health will be hosting a back to school bash as well next week.
On August 8, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00, head to Marfa Elementary for free sports physicals, free school vaccinations for qualifying students and free backpacks – while supplies last.
The elementary school is located at 413 W. Columbia St.

In August, Permian Basin Gifts of Hope is hosting a celebration for cancer fighters, survivors and their families in Alpine.
The Midland-based nonprofit is partnering with the local Alpine business Scoops Coffee & Pastries for the event, which will be August 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. There will be a local cancer survivor sharing her journey, a free scoop of ice cream for survivors and their families, music, and ribbon tying for all the different types of cancer. Scoops Coffee & Pastries is located at 106 W. Sul Ross Ave.

Nina Perales es abogada de MALDEF, el Fondo Mexicano-Americano de Defensa Legal y Educación. Perales declaró ante el Comité Senatorial de Redistribución de Distritos del Congreso que los tejanos deberían poder ver un mapa de las revisiones propuestas, que hasta ahora no se han publicado.

Los legisladores estatales afirman que se programarán audiencias públicas de seguimiento una vez que se presenten los mapas.

En pocos días, celebre el fin de semana de los Osos Negros de Big Bend en Alpine. El evento de dos días comienza el viernes 1ro de agosto en la Galería 5th Street, donde el artista Chris Ruggia exhibirá sus pinturas y dibujos originales de osos de 5:00 a 7:00.
En una entrevista con KVLF, Ruggia comentó que algunas de las obras que exhibirá se crearon durante una residencia artística en el Parque Nacional Big Bend.
cito: “Tengo dos pinturas de osos negros que surgieron de mi residencia artística en el Parque Nacional Big Bend el verano pasado. Y también hay siete dibujos en blanco y negro de osos negros que estaban en el libro que publiqué hace un tiempo. Así que estos serán los dibujos originales y las impresiones de esos dibujos que exhibiré. Y todo ese trabajo se inspiró directamente en los proyectos sobre osos del Borderlands Research Institute”.
Al día siguiente, sábado, los investigadores repasarán esos proyectos y lo que han descubierto sobre los osos negros en el Big Bend.
“El Departamento de Parques y Vida Silvestre de Texas financia esa investigación, en parte, en el Instituto de Investigación de Borderlands, para que puedan aprender qué hacen los osos y cuáles son las mejores maneras de gestionar nuestros hábitats para que no los atraigan”. dijo
