Good evening, today is Friday, July 29th and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Services for Maria “Flora” Conners of Marfa were Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with burial in Merced Cemetery. She died Tuesday at age 91.
Flora was born November 6, 1930, in Marfa, where she grew up and attended Blackwell School.
Her nickname “Flora,” which is Spanish for flower, came from her love of flowers in her yard as she sat with them and her peach tree.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, who died last month, a brother and four sisters.
Surviving are three children, three sisters, two brothers, seven grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Sanderson Station assisted in the recovery of the dead adult daughter of a migrant family in the desert Wednesday.
The Terrell County Sheriff’s Office reported she had been left behind and the migrant parents were arrested after the National Guard encountered them near U.S. Highway 90.
Big Bend Sector Chief Patrol Agent Sean McGoffin said responding agencies made a huge effort trying to save the life of the young lady, describing the incident as “tragic.”
He stressed how dangerous the terrain and weather can be for migrants or anyone in this region and asked any who see something suspicious to report it by calling 866/581-7549.
Alpine Independent School District registration for the 2022-23 school year will be all next week at the Alpine Elementary and Middle School.
It will start with the Middle School at the Alpine Middle School Cafeteria with 5th grade registration Monday, 6th grade Tuesday, 7th grade Wednesday and 8th Grade Thursday.
New Students will register Monday as well. All registration will run from 9 to 3 with a lunch break from 11 to 1.
Elementary students register at the Alpine Elementary cafeteria starting with new student registration for Pre-Kinder Tuesday from 9 to 11 and Kinder through 4th from 1 to 4.
Returning students for Pre-K 4 and Kindergarten will be Wednesday from 9 to 11, followed by 1st and 2nd graders from 1 to 3.
Returning 3rd and 4th graders will register Thursday from 9 to 11.
High School students will register this year at the Middle School Cafeteria August 9 through 11.
Seniors will register August 9 from 8:30 to 11:30 followed by Juniors registering the same day from 1:30 to 3:30.
Sophomores will Register August 10 from 8:30 to 11:30 with Freshman registering from 1:30 to 3:30 that same day.
New High School Student Registration will be August 11 and 12 from 8:30 to 3:30 p.m. with a lunch break from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30.
All new Alpine I.S.D. students must bring their birth certificate, social security card, immunization record, parent’s driver’s license and previous school’s information to register.
The Big Bend Bluegrass Jam has been rescheduled after the regular monthly jam was canceled for health reasons.
It will be at noon Saturday afternoon during Viva Big Bend at the new Visitors Center Pavilion at 106 North 3rd Street beginning at noon or shortly thereafter, until 2.
The jam is not an official part of Viva, with 65 musical performances scheduled in 17 venues in Terlingua, Alpine, Marfa, Marathon and Fort Davis.
It will begin right after the performance of Mr. Wills, a children’s entertainer, whose performance begins at 11.
