Good evening, today is Wednesday, July 26th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The Alpine Business Alliance heard about a plan to upgrade three area classic hotels at a called meeting Tuesday evening.
Collin Bibb and Brian Carrico of Byways Hospitality told of their plans to coordinate the renovation and restoration of three iconic properties in the Big Bend region.
They include the Holland Hotel, Hotel Limpia in Fort Davis and the Maverick Inn. Holland owner Charles Mallory is providing significant equity and will remain as an active partner.
A power-point presentation said they are seeking local investments to go with other funds raised through other means.
Plans include a restored lobby bar, ballroom and restaurant in the Holland and an expanded courtyard, pool and restaurant at the Limpia.
The Maverick would see 20 additional rooms behind the existing hotel and some exterior changes.
Bibb and Carrico also plan to update the furniture, fixtures and equipment so the 100-year-old hotels can continue to serve guests and the surrounding community for the next century.
Alpine will celebrate a fairly-new event early next month, the Fiesta 1888 on the downtown historic Murphy Street.
The event on Saturday, August 5, is rooted in the city’s heritage and brings locals and visitors together for a day of fun, music, food and more.
It starts at 11 when vendors from across the region will open their stalls. At 1, motor enthusiasts can rev up for the Classic Car Show.
The music begins at 5 with a guest performance by the Pecos River Band de Efren Rodriguez and their eclectic mix of Texan and Mexican music.
The Puro Party All Starz will take the stage at 8 with a blend of popular genres and the headline act will be Augustine Ramirez “La Ley de Tejas” from 10 to 1 Sunday morning.
Attendees are reminded to bring their lawn chairs and their favorite beverages, as the event is B.Y.O.B.

A Presidio County woman faces as much as life in prison on her guilty plea Tuesday to one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl.
In her plea in federal district court in Alpine, 33-year-old Cherakee Lee Perez was convicted of a negative declaration during vehicle inspection at the Presidio Port of Entry.
A narcotic detection dog alerted to 29 packages hidden in the vehicle containing about 4.5 kilograms of methamphetamine and 13 with seven kilos of fentanyl.
Perez is scheduled to be sentenced on October 23 and faces a penalty of 10 years to life in prison.
And Hector Bernal Junior of El Paso was sentenced to 96 months in prison Monday for possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
He was a passenger in a vehicle at the Border Patrol Checkpoint in Alpine on February 25 and agents confiscated 248 pounds of marijuana.
Presidio County Sheriff’s has posted on Facebook that it is working with federal and state authorities on the illegal importation of livestock and the spread of infectious diseases.
Horses that enter Texas that are being sold or are in public places are required to have proof of a negative Coggins test which detects the presence of Equine Infectious Anemia antibodies.
Several horses and cattle have been found to be positive for infectious diseases.
If livestock is proven to have crossed illegally from Mexico, federal authorities can also charge the subject with smuggling on top of state charges for illegally transporting livestock.
Deputies have encountered more than 30 head of livestock traveling illegally without Coggins in the last two months.

Una mujer del condado de Presidio enfrenta hasta cadena perpetua por su declaración de culpabilidad el martes por un cargo de posesión con la intención de distribuir metanfetamina y fentanilo.
En su declaración ante el tribunal federal de distrito en Alpine, Cherakee Lee Perez, de 33 años, fue condenada por una declaración negativa durante la inspección del vehículo en el puerto de entrada de Presidio.
