Good evening, today is Tuesday, July 25th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The addition of as many as 14 new homes in the Alpine area took another step toward reality Tuesday when the Commissioners Court approved a plat for the Sage Brush development.
Developer Mattie Matthaei said she plans for 14 new houses on one-acre sites near 1900 Mosely Loop on lots she will sell to builders for $40,000 each.
The area generally is considered to be a part of Alpine but it is outside the city limits. The county Groundwater Conservation District approved her allotment last week.
County Judge Greg Henington asked if she could tap onto the city water service and she said she had tried that but was told it was not prepared to add onto its network.
The city is dealing with serious infrastructure problems both with its water and its wastewater system.
Matthaei said she could connect to city water in the future but will make that decision when it is offered.
The Alpine Business Alliance and others have cited a need for affordable housing as one hurdle to overcome in returning to a profitable business community in Alpine.
It has a working group trying to restore the city’s businesses lost as a result of the Covid Pandemic.
Every year the U.S. Border Patrol, specifically in the southwest border sectors, encounter the remains of numerous migrants who die due to heat-related injuries.
The Patrol considers the death of any human being as tragic and Big Bend Sector issued a statement to warn people of the danger.
So far in Fiscal Year 2023, Big Bend has recorded 63 rescues that include rescue beacon activations and 911 calls from migrants in distress.
Unfortunately, Big Bend Sector also has discovered five dead migrants so far this fiscal year, which began October 1.
To reduce the number of deaths, Big Bend Sector is encouraging people not to cross the border into the United States illegally.
Big Bend Sector Chief Patrol Agent Sean McGoffin said extreme heat has the potential to be deadly and kills more people than any other weather event.
He asked potential border crossers not to cross illegally during these extreme heat conditions. It is simply not worth the risk of their lives, he said.

Entries in the City of Alpine’s photo contest have until September 30 to submit their work.
Celebrating its thirteenth consecutive year, this annual contest showcases the town’s spirit and scenic wonders through the lens of talented individuals.
Director of Tourism Chris Ruggia said the contest provides a platform to showcase talent and a chance to win cash prizes.
The top winner will be awarded a grand cash prize of 500 dollars and five other winners will be selected and receive prizes of 50 to 100 dollars.

The official grand opening of the Granada Theatre’s Alcove Social in the space of the former Saddle Club is planned with a ribbon cutting at 6 Wednesday evening.
The former restaurant has had its “soft opening” as a bar with occasional food service on special occasions.

La adición de hasta 14 casas nuevas en el área de Alpine dio otro paso hacia la realidad el martes cuando el Tribunal de Comisionados aprobó un plano para el desarrollo de Sage Brush.
El desarrollador Mattie Matthaei dijo que planea construir 14 casas nuevas en sitios de un acre cerca de 1900 Mosely Loop en lotes que venderá a constructores por 40 a 60 mil dólares cada uno.
El área generalmente se considera parte de Alpine, pero está fuera de los límites de la ciudad. El Distrito de Conservación de Aguas Subterráneas del condado aprobó su asignación la semana pasada.
El juez del condado Greg Henington preguntó si podía aprovechar el servicio de agua de la ciudad y dijo que lo había intentado, pero le dijeron que no estaba preparado para agregarlo a su red.
