Funeral services are pending for Maria T. Gonzales, who died Friday in Lubbock.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, one daughter, two brothers and two sisters. Surviving are two sons, one daughter and a brother.
Alpine Independent School District is continuing to adapt safety measures as the 2022-23 school year begins.
Alpine I.S.D. is renewing their school resource officer agreement with the Brewster County Sheriff’s department to have three full time School Resource Officers, one in each campus.
There is also a new partnership with the Sheriff’s to increase police presence by allowing them to write reports on campus, allowing deputies to get familiar with students and staff.
New Superintendent Dr. Michelle Rinehart said they are also performing targeted safety audits on every campus revising strengths and potential areas of concern.
Rinehart: “Every district is doing their best in any given moment to be as safe and secure as possible while also looking ahead to ‘what are our next steps, what else can we do?”
Starting this year there will also be weekly door sweeps and a stricter door policy, which Rinehart said can go against our West Texas manners for everyone’s safety.
Rinehart: “I’ll just give a blanket apology to the whole community that if one of our staff members redirects you, won’t hold the door for you and redirects you to the front of the building, that’s why.”
Alpine I.S.D. registration will begin the first two weeks of August with Elementary students registering in the elementary school and all other students registering at the Middle School.

Texas annually has a state sales tax holiday before each school year so shoppers can save money on clothes and school supplies and not have to pay the state sales tax.
This year, it will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 5, 6 and 7.
State law exempts sales tax on qualified items such as clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced less than $100.
This saves them about $8 on every 100 they spend.
Comptroller Glenn Hegar said the tax holiday will provide some relief for Texas struggling with inflation that is driving prices higher on just about everything.
He estimates that shoppers will save 112 million dollars in state and local sales tax during this sales tax holiday.
Apparel and school supplies that may be purchased tax-free are listed on the Comptroller’s website at texastaxholiday.org.
Sul Ross State University’s Small Business Development Center is hosting two virtual trainings this week.
Sandage Consulting Owner Pari Sandage will present a webinar on the basics of payroll processing and your obligations as an employer at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Sandage will discuss the differences between paying someone as a contractor or an employee and answer questions for any business owner.
Also at 9 a.m. the next day, S.B.D.C. will host a free online meeting discussing how employee relations impact all elements of the employment lifecycle.
The meeting will explore opportunities and resources small business employers can use to attract, develop and keep employees.
