Good evening, today is Friday, July 24th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Viva Big Bend, one of the Red-Letter events of our region, is this week, Wednesday through Sunday.
The annual multi-venue concert series has published the schedule for this year’s festival featuring more than 65 shows and multiple venues.
This twelfth year, Viva Big Bend will include more than 15 venues in Alpine, Marfa, Marathon, Fort Davis, Terlingua and for the first time in Presidio.
Viva Big Bend Producer Stuart Ramser said his vision for Viva is to continue the natural growth it has experienced while maintaining what makes the area special.
Ramser: “It’s really sustained itself, and in this very similar model that we had from the very beginning, so more of the same, hopefully a little bigger but it goes by fast.”
Bands and musicians with a wide variety of styles are expected to be showcased around the Tri-County area.
Venues include the Granada Theatre, Starlight Theater, Holland Hotel, Gage Hotel, Kelly Pavilion, Cibolo Creek, Hotel Richey, Planet Marfa, Spicewood and many more.
Ramser said his measure for success for Viva Big Bend is based on making sure that everyone has an abundance of things to do, see, taste and return to.
Ramser: “I love to see people circulating throughout the region and exploring the region. And really, there’s so much going on during Viva weekend I want them to feel like they have to come back.”

Online registration closes Thursday for the Alpine Independent School District for the 2023-24 school year.
All Alpine students, new and returning, will need to complete the online registration at alpine.esc18.net/registration.
An in-person registration support session will be available from 8:30 to 11:30 and 1:30 to 3:30 Tuesday through Thursday at the Alpine High School Library.

Alpine High School Cheerleaders will host a mini cheer camp featuring Alpine Middle School Cheerleaders for incoming Pre-K-4 through sixth graders tomorrow through Thursday.
This is a fun opportunity for your mini cheerleader to learn instruction in cheers, chants and dances, get a picture with Belvi and a camp T-Shirt.
The camp will be from 6 to 8 at 30 dollars per camper with a showcase on day three for parents and a performance on the first Varsity football game of the fall season August 25.

Local law enforcement officers continue to make arrests of illegal border crossers in our area.
A Brewster County deputy conducted a traffic stop on Highway 385 South of Marathon Friday and arrested the driver and six illegal migrants from Mexico.
The vehicle was driven by Raul Omar Reyes, who was charged with six counts of smuggling of persons, each charge a third-degree felony.
The six additional suspects were referred to the U.S. Border Patrol for processing and deportation.
