David L. “Red” Brown, of Valentine, has died. He was 81.
Although he was born in Marfa, Red grew up in Valentine and graduated from Valentine High School in 1962. Even when he was growing up, his heart belonged to the open road. He hauled cattle and sheep after school, on weekends, and during the summer.
Red joined his father in the family trucking business, and in 1974, he founded his own operation, B&H Trucking. For over six decades Red hauled cattle, feed, and produce across the country. He estimated he drove over some 8 million miles over his career. Known for his fleet of classy, powerful trucks, Red was a legend among truckers.
Red married LaNell Kelley on December 30, 1967, and together they shared 57 years of love and partnership. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and his family meant the world to him.
Red is survived by his wife LaNell; two daughters; a grandson, a sister, and numerous cousins,
nieces, and nephews.
Red Brown lived big, drove far, and loved deeply. His legacy will live on in the lives he touched and the roads he paved.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on August 2 at Valentine Community Church, followed by a Celebration of Life at The Mercantile in Valentine.

Viva Big Bend is underway, and over the next several days, the music festival will throw over 65 shows in more than a dozen venues across the region.
Robert Alvarez told county officials earlier this week (TUESDAY) that it’s been an unusually busy summer. It’s a trend that could continue with the start of the music festival.
ALVAREZ1: “Ya know, it’s usually our down season, it’s usually hot. We’ve had some nice weather, the word’s gotten out. I’ve spoken with several hoteliers, and not 100 percent, but pretty much across the board–you know, 70, 80 percent–they’re all up in occupancy compared to last year.”
Some of this year’s artists include Kat Hasty, Maximiliano & the Texas Mamas, Stephanie Bergera, Grupo Alegre, and Stella & the Very Messed.
The festival runs through the 27th.

Alpine’s Buck Band is set to kick off the marching season with summer rehearsals starting Monday, July 28.
Summer rehearsals will run Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00.
These practices are mandatory for all students participating in the program this year. Students attending the practices are required to bring a 64 oz. refillable water bottle, athletic, closed-toe shoes, and their instrument, along with reeds, valve oil, and other necessary accessories.
The school also encourages students to bring sunblock, hats, and sunglasses to protect against the summer heat during outdoor rehearsals.

Next month, celebrate Big BendBlack Bears weekend in Alpine. The two-day event starts August 1 at 5th Street Gallery, where artist Chris Ruggia will showcase his original bear paintings and drawings from 5 to 7 p.m.
Then on Saturday, at 2 p.m. head to Front Street Books for a talk on the latest research from the Borderlands Research Institute.

Registration is now open for the next Texas Master Naturalist program.
The first session for new members will be next month – on Saturday, August 23, at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center. The first class will focus on understanding the geological and biological events that have resulted in the Big Bend ecosystems we see today.

Aunque nació en Marfa, Red creció en Valentine y se graduó de la escuela preparatoria Valentine en 1962. Incluso de niño, su pasión era la carretera. Transportaba ganado y ovejas después de la escuela, los fines de semana y durante el verano.
Red se unió a su padre en el negocio familiar de transporte de mercancías y, en 1974, fundó su propia empresa, B&H Trucking. Durante más de seis décadas, Red transportó ganado, alimento y productos agrícolas por todo el país. Calculó que recorrió más de 13 millones de kilómetros a lo largo de su carrera. Conocido por su flota de camiones elegantes y potentes, Red era una leyenda entre los camioneros.

La Banda Buck de Alpine comenzará la temporada de marcha con ensayos de verano a partir del lunes 28 de julio.
Los ensayos de verano se realizarán de lunes a viernes, de 9:00 a. m. a 1:00 p. m., y los sábados, de 3:00 p. m. a 6:00 p. m.
Estos ensayos son obligatorios para todos los estudiantes que participan en el programa este año. Los estudiantes que asistan a los ensayos deben traer una botella de agua recargable de 64 oz, calzado deportivo cerrado y su instrumento, junto con aceite para válvulas y otros accesorios necesarios.
La escuela también recomienda a los estudiantes traer protector solar, sombreros y gafas de sol para protegerse del calor del verano durante los ensayos al aire libre.
