Earlier today (TUESDAY), county commissioners extended the burn ban in Brewster County for another 45 days – noting that the recent rains have led to a growth in vegetation, which is potential “fuel” for fires.
James Etchison is the county’s emergency management coordinator
ETCHISON1: “The hot weather’s coming, that’s gonna start killing off this grass. So we’ll make sure that we keep our areas trimmed down to at least a manageable level, so that when the rains stop we can have a good mitigation over the fire area.” (0:16)
The county’s also looking to update its flood maps, which Etchison says haven’t been updated in 35 years. Flood maps show the areas with the highest risk of flooding.
ETCHISON2: When we did a drive through, with the last flood we had, there were places that were flooding that are not on the flood map. So we need to get this updated asap.” (0:12)
At the end of the meeting, county commissioners unanimously voted to place the county’s election administrator, Melissa Bergstrom, on paid administrative leave. Last week, Bergstrom was arrested for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from the booster club for the Alpine High School band.
Bergstrom has submitted her resignation to the county – which commissioners accepted today (TUESDAY). Bergstrom’s last day will coincide with the end of her paid administrative leave, and will be August 22.

Later this week, the Big Bend Hospital District will hold its next meeting.
On the agenda are hospital updates from Big Bend Regional Medical Center’s CEO Robert Nelson and a report from the Terlingua Clinic. The hospital district board will also discuss the Presidio Health Center building.
The hospital district meets July 24 at 4:00 p.m. at the Marathon Health Center, located at 101 Post road.

Next month, Big Bend Health is hosting a back to school bash in Marfa.
On August 8, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00, head to Marfa Elementary for free sports physicals, free school vaccinations for qualifying students and free backpacks – while supplies last.
The elementary school is located at 413 W. Columbia St.

Also next month, ahead of the start of school, there will be a back-to-school drive in Fort Davis. Organizers are currently looking for donations of backpacks and school supplies. Donations can be left at the Chamber and Visitor Center office.
The back-to-school drive takes place Sunday, August. 3, from 3:00 p.m. to 5.

In August, Permian Basin Gifts of Hope is hosting a celebration for cancer fighters, survivors and their families in Alpine.
The Midland-based nonprofit is partnering with the local Alpine business Scoops Coffee & Pastries for the event, which will be August 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. There will be a local cancer survivor sharing her journey, a free scoop of ice cream for survivors and their families, music, and ribbon tying for all the different types of cancer. Scoops Coffee & Pastries is located at 106 W. Sul Ross Ave.
