Five new medical providers for the Alpine area were introduced to the public at a Meet and Greet by Big Bend Regional Medical Center at the Granada Theater Thursday.
Hospital C.E.O. Rick Flores recognized a shortage of providers in the area but promised a recent meeting of the Hospital District that more were on their way.
Dr. Adrian Billings, who headed Preventive Care Health Services in Alpine and Marfa, has taken in student doctors for residency training and now does similar work for Texas Tech.
His efforts have been in an effort to increase access to health care in the area where patients frequently have to travel to Midland-Odessa or El Paso for specialist care.
The need for more providers has been cited as a detriment to economic development for the area.
New providers include pediatrician Dr. Sarah Zate, family practice Dr. David Nitschmann, O.B.G.Y.N Dr. Luis Ruiz, General Surgeon Dr. V.A. Benavides and Downs F.N.P. Dr. Olivia Calzada.
Another gas pipeline through west Texas is drawing some opposition similar to those against the Trans Pecos Pipeline though Alpine when it went in six years ago.
The Big Bend Sentinel reports this week that a group of citizens in Van Horn has come together to protest a gas pipeline proposed by ONEOK of Tulsa.
It would run within about a mile of the Van Horn city limits carrying gas from the Waha Hub near Coyanosa to Mexico through Reeves, Jeff Davis, Culberson and Hudspeth Counties.
It would end at the Rio Grande in Hudspeth County where it would meet with the Mexican pipeline to deliver gas to the interior of Mexico.
Concerns expressed are similar to those raised here when the T.P.P. was proposed in 2017.
Concerns about the new plan include possible damage to the ecology of the region and disruption of archeological sites.
The City of Alpine has announced that the next monthly bulk pick up will occur the week of Monday, July 31.
Residents must schedule their pickup with Texas Disposal Systems the week prior.
Pickups may be scheduled before noon between Monday and Friday next week. Call Texas Disposal Systems at 837-0845 to schedule your pickup.
Once the pick-up has been scheduled, place your bulk items on the curb or right of way directly in front of your home.
Do not put anything onto the roadway, in an alley, or next to a dumpster.
Texas Parks and Wildlife will host the Second Annual Gear Up for Game Wardens Online Auction in September to provide specialty gear for Texas Game Wardens.
Since 2017, donors have helped provide equipment ranging from thermal search-and-rescue drones to side-scan sonars and more.
Proceeds from the online auction September 26 through 28 will provide program support and ensure that Texas Game Wardens receive much-needed equipment.
Donations can be made specifically for our Region 1, which encompasses nearly 60 thousand square miles.
All bidding will be online at the Gear Up Online Auction website where participants can bid on items like hunting and fishing experiences, mugs, coolers, firearms and more.
There is no charge for an item unless you win a bid. Winners will be notified through text if they do. You also will be notified through text if you do not win a bid.

El Dr. Adrian Billings, quien dirigió los Servicios de Salud de Atención Preventiva en Alpine y Marfa, ha aceptado a estudiantes de medicina para la capacitación de residencia y ahora realiza un trabajo similar para Texas Tech.
