Today (TUESDAY) a D.C. district court judge heard arguments in a local lawsuit against the Trump administration and its plans for a border wall through Presidio and the wider Big Bend area.
The lawsuit – brought forward by the Presidio Municipal Development District – argues the plan could lead to flash flooding.
PMDD, an economic development organization in Presidio, is ultimately asking the district judge to issue an injunction and temporarily halt construction on the wall so that the proper assessments can be made to avoid flooding.
In part, a lawyer representing the economic district told a D.C. district judge that those kinds of reviews typically take anywhere from nine months to two years – and she has QUOTE “significant doubt” whether that kind of “robust” review can happen considering the government’s goal of beginning border wall construction in the next month.
A lawyer with the federal government called that argument “speculative” and said there isn’t a final design yet and they’re still determining how to QUOTE “safely implement a wall in this region.”
The judge in the case said he’ll issue a ruling sometime in the next week.

Earlier Tuesday morning, the Jeff Davis County Sheriff’s Office says it was informed of a body on highway 118 – five miles south of Kent.
According to the department, they requested assistance from the Texas Rangers and both agencies are conducting an investigation.
The department says there’s no additional information and the deceased individual has not been identified.

This week, the Small Business Development Center at Sul Ross State University will host training sessions for business owners.
The next training is tomorrow (WEDNESDAY) and will give you an overview of the fundamentals of intellectual property. That session starts at 10:00 a.m.

Starting next week, you can schedule a bulk trash pick-up with the city of Alpine for the month of August.
From Monday, July 27 to Friday, July 31 before noon, make your appointment for the week beginning Monday, August 3. The city will haul away your trash – including mattresses, furniture, large plastic toys and appliances.
Each household is limited to 5 items or 3 cubic yards worth items to be picked up.

Hoy (martes), un juez de distrito de Washington D.C. escuchó los argumentos de una demanda local contra la administración Trump y sus planes para construir un muro fronterizo que atraviese Presidio y la zona más amplia de Big Bend.
La demanda —presentada por el Distrito de Desarrollo Municipal de Presidio (PMDD, por sus siglas en inglés)— sostiene que el proyecto podría provocar inundaciones repentinas.
El PMDD, una organización de desarrollo económico de Presidio, solicita al juez de distrito que emita una orden judicial para detener temporalmente la construcción del muro, a fin de que se realicen las evaluaciones adecuadas para prevenir inundaciones.
Una abogada que representa al distrito económico declaró ante el juez de distrito de Washington D.C. que este tipo de revisiones suelen tardar entre nueve meses y dos años; asimismo, expresó tener —cito— “serias dudas” de que pueda llevarse a cabo una evaluación tan “exhaustiva”, dado que el gobierno tiene previsto iniciar la construcción del muro fronterizo el próximo mes.
Por su parte, un abogado del gobierno federal calificó dicho argumento de “especulativo” y señaló que aún no existe un diseño definitivo, ya que todavía se está determinando cómo —cito— “implementar de manera segura un muro en esta región”.
El juez a cargo del caso anunció que emitirá un fallo en el transcurso de la próxima semana.

Esta mañana, la Oficina del Sheriff del condado de Jeff Davis informó que recibió un aviso sobre el hallazgo de un cuerpo en la carretera 118, a cinco millas al sur de Kent.
