Good evening, today is Thursday, July 20th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
No services have been scheduled for Ronald Gene Smith of Alpine, who died peacefully at home Friday at age 70.
Ron was born on April 15, 1953, in Port Arthur.
He worked for Key Electronics for 11 years and for Big Bend Telephone for 22 years before retiring in 2013 and pursuing his hobby of stargazing in his backyard observatory.
Ron was a Christian and believed in the value of organizations like St . Jude Children’s Research Hospital and made a monthly contribution to its cause.
Although he chose not to join Mensa when offered membership, he ranked at the 98th percentile on a standardized, I.Q. intelligence test.
Ron is survived by his wife Diana, a son and a stepson, two brothers and four grandchildren.
It was Ron’s wish to be cremated and he did not want a funeral, viewing or a memorial service.
The Texas Broadband Development Office will meet at the Alpine Civic Center at 801 West Holland Avenue from 5 to 7 August 8.
The development office and the Upper Rio Grande Regional Working Group want to hear from citizens about internet connectivity in the region to develop a comprehensive state plan.
This plan will serve as a roadmap for achieving reliable and affordable broadband, high-quality device access, digital skills training and cybersecurity awareness.
With these comments they’ll assess the needs and priorities of the community for the billions of dollars the state is receiving to bring internet connectivity to all residents.
The meeting will include a discussion of broadband work in Texas and host breakout group discussions about barriers and solutions to digital opportunity.
Alpine High School Cheerleaders will host a mini cheer camp featuring Alpine Middle School Cheerleaders for incoming Pre-K-4 through 6th graders Tuesday through Thursday.
This is a fun opportunity for your mini cheerleader to learn instruction in cheers, chants and dances, get a picture with Belvi and a camp T-Shirt.
The camp will be from 6 to 8 at 30 dollars per camper with a showcase on day three for parents and a performance on the first Varsity football game of the fall season August 25.

The Alpine Avalanche reports that Emilee Charlesworth of Marathon is headed to The American Rodeo Contender Regional semi-finals to compete in breakaway roping.
The newspaper says the American Rodeo is an annual western sports and entertainment event that represents the richest weekend event in all of western sports.
This annual event brings together the top professional rodeo athletes to compete in a winner-take-all competition that could culminate in the largest two-day paycheck of their careers.
Charlesworth secured an automatic qualification to the competition for the central region, which she says is the toughest region of competition.
We have reported here about Meet and Greet events for Republican Congressional candidate Victor Avila in Terlingua and Alpine this weekend.
The event at Kokernot Park has been scheduled at 4 Sunday near the entrance to the baseball stadium.
We since have learned that fans have been encouraged to come early to Sunday’s game, before the first pitch.
Jimmy Morris, a D.P.S. pilot and School Board Member, is scheduled to land his agency helicopter on the field during game warmups.
The landing will be the first in Kokernot history.
