Victoria “Vicki” Kempf Harris passed away earlier this month on July 8. She was 64.
A lifelong resident of Terlingua, Vicki was a beloved member of the Big Bend community whose spirit was as wild and beautiful as the desert she called home.
Vicki was a true fixture of Terlingua. She knew the desert like the back of her hand and never hesitated to share a story, offer advice, or speak her mind. For many visitors, she was the first person they met when arriving in Terlingua, and over the years she formed lifelong friendships with people from all walks of life.
She found joy in dancing, singing, running the river, studying herbs, and spending time beneath the endless West Texas stars. She loved watching the sun rise over the Chisos Mountains and the desert come alive at sunset. And she had a special gift for befriending every person – and every desert critter – she encountered.
Above all else, Vicki loved being a mother to her children and a “Tía” to anyone who needed a helping hand, a kind word, or a place to belong.
She is survived by her three children, her sister and her extended family and countless friends throughout the Big Bend region.
Vicki’s legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her, and in every desert sunrise and sunset over the land she cherished. May she rest in peace.
A celebration of life will be held next month on August 22 – what would have been Vicki’s 65 birthday.
Family and friends are invited to gather at the Terlingua Ghost Town Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. A celebration in her honor will follow the service.

Tomorrow (TUESDAY), the city of Alpine will host a budget workshop followed by a regular city council meeting.
The budget workshop starts at 4:00 p.m. at the city council chambers. Tomorrow’s city council meeting includes department updates, talks about allocating HOT tax funds to recipients of this year’s grant awards, and a discussion regarding the effort to restore the old railway station on Del Rio Street.
The city council meeting takes place at 803 W. Holland Avenue, and starts after the budget workshop on Tuesday.

In a short few days, Viva Big Bend, the annual tri-county music festival, returns for its 15th year.
The event kicks off Wednesday, July 22 with a slate of free performances in Terlingua, Fort Davis, and Alpine. Then on Thursday, the full festival takes off in Alpine with shows at Lucia, the Railroad Blues, the Ritchey, and at Planet Marfa.
Artists on Thursday include: Summer Dean, The Swifts, and Jeff Crosby.
Over the five-day music festival, there will be over 65 shows across 20 venues in Alpine, Fort Davis, Marathon, Marfa, Terlingua and Presidio.
The annual music festival takes place from Wednesday through Sunday, July 26.

At the end of the month (JULY), Big Bend Radio will host a blood drive at their studios in Alpine.
The bloodmobile happens Monday, July 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Next week, the Marfa Golf Classic – a two person scramble challenge – takes place at the “highest course in Texas.”
First place prize is $1,300, second place gets $750 and third place wins $550.

The two-day event takes place Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2. Tee times are 8:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. respectively.

Next month (AUGUST), head to the Alpine Public Library to watch a livestream of a summertime concert put on by the Seattle Chamber Music Society.
Catch a delayed stream of the performance, which will feature Haydn (HAY-den), Respighi (reh-spee-ghee), and Dvorak (duh-vor-AK) – on Sunday, August 2 at 4:00 p.m.
The location to watch the performance will be the community room of the Alpine Public Library. Entrance to the community room is on the north side of the building.

Also in August, the Borderlands Research Institute at Sul Ross will host a three-day conference on sustaining lands to support wildlife across Texas.
BRI, along with the Texas Wildlife Association and Texas Parks and Wildlife, will bring together landowners, industry experts, and like-minded conservationists to cover emerging issues in the Trans-Pecos, big game and non-game research and management, applied management, and land stewardship.
The Trans-Pecos Wildlife Conference takes place August 5 through 7 at the Morgan Center at Sul Ross.

El BRI, junto con la Texas Wildlife Association y el Texas Parks and Wildlife, reunirá a propietarios de tierras, expertos del sector y conservacionistas con intereses afines para abordar temas emergentes en la región de Trans-Pecos, tales como la investigación y el manejo de especies de caza mayor y otras especies, la gestión aplicada y la administración responsable de la tierra.
