Today (THURSDAY) and tomorrow (FRIDAY) are the last days to schedule a bulk trash pick-up with the city of Alpine for next week.
You’ll have until Friday at noon to make your appointment for a trash pickup for the week of July 6. The city will haul away your trash – including mattresses, furniture, large plastic toys and appliances.
Each household is limited to 5 items or 3 cubic yards worth items to be picked up.

And with Independence Day approaching, don’t forget there will be plenty to do in Alpine and the surrounding Big Bend area. The day’s celebrations in Alpine start with the annual Fourth of July Parade beginning at 10:00 a.m. The route will wind through the town, starting at Kokernot Park then heading down 5th Street and ultimately ending at the courthouse.
And at the courthouse there will be a blue-ribbon cook off competition. The categories are “best baked good” and “preserved perfection.” The competitions are free to enter. The turn in time for baked goods is 11:00 a.m. with judging at 11:30 a.m. The turn in time for a preserved dish is noon with judging at 12:30 p.m.
The awards ceremony for the cook off will be at 1:00 p.m. And there will be plenty of entertainment throughout the day and the Fourth celebrations culminate with fireworks at Kokernot Park at 9:30 p.m.

On Friday, the Marfa Studio of Arts is holding a silent art auction to benefit its program that provides art classes at Marfa Elementary.
The auction, called “Neighbors and New Friends,” will feature donated artworks from artists near and far, with all proceeds going towards funding the new year of art classes at Marfa Elementary.
The event takes place on Friday, July 3 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with bidding starting promptly at 5:00 p.m.

Later this month (JULY), the nonprofit Historic Alpine invites the public to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Archives of the Big Bend at Sul Ross State University.
Enjoy an evening of conversation, refreshments, historic displays, and shared memories as the group honors the Archives of the Big Bend and the people who have helped preserve the region’s history.
The celebration is July 10 starting at 6:00 p.m. at the Bryan Wildenthal Memorial Library on the Sul Ros campus.

Beginning next week, the Chinati Foundation, the nonprofit arts organization in Marfa, will host two film screenings at the Crowley Theater: Maddie’s Secret by John Early and a collection of short films by Wes Anderson.
The directors of both films will give introductions to their movies before each screening. The movies are free and open to the public – seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The screening for Maddie’s Secret is Tuesday, July 7 at 7:00 p.m. and the showing of short films with Wes Anderson will be Tuesday, July 14 at 4:30 p.m.
The Crowley Theater is located at 98 S. Austin St. in Marfa.

Next month (AUGUST), the Borderlands Research Institute at Sul Ross will host a three-day conference about tackling issues, strengthening partnerships and sustaining lands to support wildlife across Texas.

Las celebraciones del día en Alpine comienzan con el desfile anual del 4 de julio a las 10:00 a. m. El recorrido atravesará la ciudad, comenzando en el parque Kokernot, siguiendo por la calle 5th Street y finalizando en el edificio del tribunal (courthouse).
En el edificio del tribunal se llevará a cabo un concurso de cocina. Las categorías son “mejor producto horneado” y “conservas perfectas”. La participación en los concursos es gratuita. La hora de entrega para los productos horneados es a las 11:00 a. m., y la evaluación comenzará a las 11:30 a. m. La hora de entrega para las conservas es al mediodía, y la evaluación será a las 12:30 p. m.
La ceremonia de premiación del concurso tendrá lugar a la 1:00 p. m. Habrá mucho entretenimiento durante todo el día, y las celebraciones del 4 de julio culminarán con fuegos artificiales en el parque Kokernot a las 9:30 p. m.
