Earlier this week, the elections administrator for Brewster County was arrested for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from the booster club for the Alpine High School band.
According to the Big Bend Sentinel, Melissa Bergstrom allegedly took nearly $15,000 from the booster’s accounts, which she managed as treasurer. The District Attorney’’s office told the Sentinel that Bergstrom was charged with misappropriation of funds after a lengthy investigation of the booster’s finances.

Tomorrow, the Marathon Public Library will be closed to complete the construction of their brand new facility.
Carlos Morales has the details.
The work the library is doing while it’s closed will see the original building connected to the library’s new space. And once that’s done, the original building will be transformed into the library’s new adult reading room.
Earlier this year, Mary Beth Schaefer told KVLF that the room will help expand the library’s offerings and create a QUOTE “dedicated space” for adult programs. She’s the president of the library’s board of directors.
SCHAEFER1: “Before [it was] a little bit tough in an 800 square foot room – if there are a lot of if there’s a kids program going on in there–for someone to go work or print or, you know, do something, and now we’re going to have this. It’s going to be great.”
The library will hold a grand opening celebration for the new facility on November 6.
The new space, which is already open to the public, has been an effort years in the making. Another part of the renovation will see the nearby adobe schoolhouse restored into a history museum.

This is the last weekend to catch the Theater of the Big Bend’s production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella.
The musical tells the story of a young woman improving her place in life through resourcefulness, kindness, and perseverance–with help, of course, from her fairy godmother.
Performances are Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8 p.m. at the Kokernot Outdoor Theatre.
Tickets are $20 for general admission and $15 for seniors and children 12 and under.
Admission is free for veterans, active-duty military, and faculty, staff and students with valid ID.

The Big Bend Arts Council is looking for artists to contribute to its next show, “Clay Works” which opens in August.
The artwork must be original, handcrafted by the artist and consist of at least 75% fired clay. Artists have until July 29 to submit up to three pieces. Other rules for submission say the artwork must have been completed within the last two years, and art in a BBAC show will not be accepted.
A reception for the event is Friday, August 1.

Registration is now open for the next Texas Master Naturalist program.
The first session for new members will be next month – on Saturday, August 23, at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center. The first class will focus on understanding the geological and biological events that have resulted in the Big Bend ecosystems we see today.

Mañana, la Biblioteca Pública de Marathon permanecerá cerrada para finalizar la construcción de sus nuevas instalaciones.
Las obras que la biblioteca está realizando durante su cierre permitirán conectar el edificio original con el nuevo espacio. Una vez finalizado, el edificio original se transformará en la nueva sala de lectura para adultos.
A principios de este año, Mary Beth Schaefer declaró a KVLF que la sala ayudará a ampliar la oferta de la biblioteca y a crear un espacio exclusivo para programas para adultos. Ella es la presidenta de la junta directiva de la biblioteca.

El musical cuenta la historia de una joven que busca mejorar su situación en la vida gracias a su ingenio, amabilidad y perseverancia, con la ayuda, por supuesto, de su hada madrina.
Las funciones se realizarán los viernes, sábados y domingos a las 8:00 en el Teatro al Aire Libre Kokernot.
Las entradas cuestan $20 para la entrada general y $15 para personas mayores y niños menores de 12 años.
La entrada es gratuita para veteranos, militares en servicio activo, profesores, personal y estudiantes con identificación válida.

El Consejo de Artes de Big Bend busca artistas que contribuyan a su próxima exposición, “Obras de Arcilla”, que se inaugura en agosto.
La obra debe ser original, hecha a mano por el artista y compuesta al menos en un 75 % de arcilla cocida. Los artistas tienen hasta el 29 de julio para enviar hasta tres piezas. Otras reglas de envío indican que la obra debe haberse completado en los últimos dos años y no se aceptarán obras que formen parte de una exposición del Consejo de Artes de Big Bend.
La recepción del evento tendrá lugar el viernes 1 de agosto.
