Beginning next week, the Texas Well Owner Network will be in the Big Bend to help residents screen their well water.
Carlos Morales has more.
Starting on Monday, the network will screen well samples for common contaminants – things like E. coli bacteria and arsenic.
The cost of each test is $15. But unlike previous years, well owners can collect their own sample instead of picking up a kit. All you have to do is fill a clean water bottle with 12 to 20 ounces of well water.
Once you get that sample, you can drop it off Monday at the Brewster County AgrilifeExtension Office or the Brewster County Underground Water Conservation District.
Then the next day, you’ll receive an explanation of the results and the network will go over water well protection practices, rainwater harvesting and how to remediate well contamination

This weekend (SUNDAY), the nonprofit animal rescue One Tail at a Time–West Texas will hold its third annual Sit for Shelter Pets event.
This event will kick off a community campaign to increase resources for the nonprofit’s six municipal shelter partners through letter writing, public awareness, and community advocacy. Sit for Shelter Pets will be held on Sunday, July 19 at Pet Marfa, located at 107 South Dean Street.
Stop by anytime between noon and 6:00 p.m. to sign a letter of support, enjoy refreshments, and meet some rescue dogs. Learn more at otatwtx.org/sit.

All next week, the Small Business Development Center at Sul Ross State University will host training sessions for business owners.
The first training next week is Tuesday, July 21, and will cover how to read and interpret financial reports ike profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements. That training starts Tuesday at 10:00 a.m.
Then on Wednesday, the SBDC will host a session on the fundamentals of intellectual property. That session starts at 10:00 a.m.
And on Thursday, the center will host a training on preparing for the tax season, and will cover the best practices for maintaining and organizing your financial records, tracking deductible expenses, and how to preparing for the tax season throughout the year.

The event is free, open to the public and intended for children in pre-k through 4th grade.

In the fall (OCOTBER), the 5th-annual Big Bend Bluegrass Festival returns to Alpine, bringing the tradition of bluegrass and American-roots music to the Big Bend.
The event, which encourages the preservation and enjoyment of the music style with free workshops and live performances, will be Friday, October 2 and Saturday October 3 at the Alpine Civic Center.

A partir de la próxima semana, la red *Texas Well Owner Network* estará en la zona de Big Bend para ayudar a los residentes a analizar el agua de sus pozos.

Finalmente, el jueves, el centro ofrecerá una capacitación sobre cómo prepararse para la temporada de impuestos; en ella se tratarán las mejores prácticas para mantener y organizar los registros financieros, llevar un control de los gastos deducibles y prepararse para la temporada fiscal a lo largo de todo el año.
