Bibiana Vasquez Lujan died Saturday, July 12. She was 90.
Affectionately known for her loving nature and calming energy, Bibiana was a shining light in all the lives who had the privilege of knowing her. She always greeted you with a loving smile and at your departure, with a warm embrace and a blessing of the Sign of the Cross.
Bibiana married Eduardo Lujan on January 15, 1949, and had seven children.
Her funny nature, quick wit and laughter will always be remembered, it was absolutely infectious. She was devoted to her husband, children, and especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by her three sons and four daughters. Bibiana was also fortunate to be blessed with 23 grandchildren, 61 great grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren.
Services for Bibiana will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marfa on Saturday, July 19. The recitation of the rosary begins at 9:30 a.m., and the funeral Mass at 10:00 with interment to follow at Cementerio de la Merced.

At last night’s city council meeting, Alpine officials discussed the city’s dark sky ordinance – from implementation and communication to enforcement.
The ordinance, which was passed in 2021, included a five-year grace period for the community to become compliant with the requirements. In part, the ordinance requires all outdoor lights to be fully shielded and have a certain kind of brightness.
Stephen Hummel is the dark sky coordinator with McDonald Observatory. He spoke during last night’s meeting.
HUMMEL1: “We’ve made some progress, I would say. There have been some businesses that have complied ahead of time, which is good to see. But by and large, there’s still a lot of work to be done in terms of lighting to get to full compliance. We’re still a pretty long way off, and with a year to go it’s time to get moving.” (0:19)
The ordinance goes into effect next year on July 6.

This weekend, the Big Bend Arts Council is hosting a beautification project at the old schoolhouse, located at 205 E. Sul Ross Avenue.
On Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon, head to the old schoolhouse to help weed and clear the area for the council’s garden project. They’ll provide coffee and donuts. Interested volunteers should bring gloves and tools – and if possible, cardboard boxes and old newspapers. They’re also looking for someone with a pickup that could help get mulch that morning at the recycling center.

This weekend, the National Parks Conservation Association will unveil the Blackwell Blueprint, a community-driven vision for the future of Blackwell School National Historic Site.
The document came together through a series of community discussions centered on the historic site, which was just one of many segregated schools across the southwest where Hispanic and white children were taught separately.
The event will take place Saturday, July 19 at the USO Building in Marfa from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Life Drawing is returning to the CreateSpace Art Studios in Alpine, the first Thursday of each month.
The first session will be on August 7 from 6:45 p.m. to 9 at 102 N 8th Street Alpine.
Easels, paper and charcoal will be provided. But if you have materials you like to work on, you can bring those. The classes are donation based, and the art studios ask for a $20 donation for each session. But if you are unable to donate, you are still welcomed – and the studios offers a barter system: you can sweep the floor or stack chairs, empty the garbage or help in some other way.
CreateSpace also rents studio space for committed artists at $100 per month.

Tenía 90 años.Conocida cariñosamente por su naturaleza amorosa y su energía tranquilizadora, Bibiana fue una luz resplandeciente en todas las vidas que tuvieron el privilegio de conocerla. En la reunión del consejo municipal de anoche, los funcionarios de Alpine discutieron la ordenanza de cielo oscuro de la ciudad, desde su implementación y comunicación hasta su cumplimiento.
La ordenanza, aprobada en 2021, incluyó un período de gracia de cinco años para que la comunidad cumpliera con los requisitos. En parte, la ordenanza exige que todas las luces exteriores estén completamente protegidas y tengan cierta luminosidad.

Este fin de semana, el Consejo de Artes de Big Bend organizará un proyecto de embellecimiento en la antigua escuela, ubicada en 205 E. Sul Ross Avenue.
El sábado, de 9:00 a. m. a mediodía, dirígase a la antigua escuela para ayudar a desherbar y limpiar el área para el proyecto de jardinería del ayuntamiento. Ofrecerán café y donas. Los voluntarios interesados deben traer guantes y herramientas, y si es posible, cajas de cartón y periódicos viejos. También buscan a alguien con camioneta que pueda ayudar a recoger mantillo esa mañana en el centro de reciclaje.

Este fin de semana, la Asociación de Conservación de Parques Nacionales presentará el Plan Blackwell, una visión impulsada por la comunidad para el futuro del Sitio Histórico Nacional de la Escuela Blackwell.
El documento se elaboró a partir de una serie de debates comunitarios centrados en el sitio histórico, que era sólo una de las muchas escuelas segregadas en el suroeste donde los niños hispanos y blancos recibían clases por separado.
El evento se llevará a cabo el sábado 19 de julio en el edificio USO en Marfa de 4:00 p.m. a 6:00 p.m.
