Connie White–who lived a life marked by faith, love, creativity, and quiet strength–peacefully passed away on July 12 in Idaho. She was 85.
After many years of dedicated service, Connie retired from the Criminal Justice Department at Sul Ross State University in Alpine. She was an intelligent, articulate, and talented woman whose kindness, humor, and gentle spirit touched the lives of many.
A woman of deep faith, Connie loved God and carried that faith with her throughout her life. She was both tender and strong, loving and resilient. She devoted herself to raising her children and took great joy in her family. Known affectionately as “Grammy,” she treasured her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great- grandchildren, who brought her endless happiness and pride.
Connie had a creative soul and enjoyed expressing herself through crochet, ceramics, and art.
She found beauty in the world around her, especially in the desert landscapes she loved and in the timeless elegance of roses. She also had a special affection for small dogs, whose companionship brought her comfort and joy throughout the years. She also cherished her friendships and was grateful for the many people who shared in her life’s journey. Whether through laughter, conversation, or simple acts of kindness, Connie built lasting relationships.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Johnny White of Alpine; her son and sister-in-law.
Connie will be remembered for her warmth, faith, creativity, wit, unwavering love for her family, and the kindness she extended to friends and strangers alike. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched, and she will be missed.
A small graveside memorial service will be held in Alpine. Date and time to be announced soon.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says a high-speed chase yesterday (WEDNESDAY) in Hudspeth County started when a vehicle failed to yield while heading west on I-10.
According to the agency, Adiran Leonardo Sandoval, of El Paso, sped away from officers and reached speeds over 100 miles per hour and QUOTE “closely followed other vehicles and proceeded to pass traffic” on the shoulder. Sandoval ended up striking another vehicle and crashed into a canal.
The department says there was one female passenger removed from the vehicle and transported to a local hospital.
Sandoval is facing multiple charges, including evading arrest or detention, reckless driving, and human smuggling.

Next week, Sul Ross State University is hosting a summer camp for teens who want to learn to make their own films! The camp will cover equipment, lighting, and visual storytelling in addition to some DIY tips.
The movie camp takes place Monday, July 20 to Friday, July 24 from 9:00 a.m. to noon each day.
The camp takes place at the Sul Ross motion capture sound stage, located off Loop road near the Alpine Country Club.
Registration is $150 per camper and includes daily snacks and supplies.

On Tuesday, the city of Alpine will host a budget workshop followed by a regular city council meeting.
The budget workshop – which will include a review of revenues, expenses and council priorities – starts Tuesday, July 21 at 4:00 p.m. As part of the regular council meeting, city officials Mayor Catherine Eaves will bring up a discussion regarding the local effort to restore the old railway station on Del Rio Street and what role, if any, the city can play.
Council members will also go over the city’s capital improvement plan and consider updates, including “project priorities, funding considerations, and next steps in the planning process.”
The city council meeting takes place at 803 W. Holland Avenue, and starts after the budget workshop on Tuesday.

Next month, head to the Alpine Public Library to watch a livestream of a summertime concert put on by the Seattle Chamber Music Society.
Catch a delayed stream of the performance, which will feature Haydn (HAY-den), Respighi (reh-spee-ghee), and Dvorak (duh-vor-AK) – on Sunday, August 2 at 4:00 p.m.
The location to watch the performance will be the community room of the Alpine Public Library. Entrance to the community room is on the north side of the building.

In August, the Borderlands Research Institute at Sul Ross will host a three-day conference on sustaining lands to support wildlife across Texas.
BRI, along with the Texas Wildlife Association and Texas Parks and Wildlife, will bring together landowners, industry experts, and like-minded conservationists to cover emerging issues in the Trans-Pecos, big game and non-game research and management, applied management, and land stewardship.
The Trans-Pecos Wildlife Conference takes place August 5 through 7 at the Morgan Center at Sul Ross.

El Departamento de Seguridad Pública de Texas informa que ayer (miércoles) se produjo una persecución a alta velocidad en el condado de Hudspeth, la cual comenzó cuando un vehículo no cedió el paso mientras circulaba en dirección oeste por la autopista I-10.
Según la agencia, Adiran Leonardo Sandoval, residente de El Paso, aceleró para huir de los agentes, alcanzando velocidades superiores a las 100 millas por hora y —citando textualmente— “siguiendo muy de cerca a otros vehículos y procediendo a rebasar el tráfico” por el acotamiento. Finalmente, Sandoval chocó contra otro vehículo y terminó cayendo en un canal.
El departamento indicó que una pasajera fue rescatada del vehículo y trasladada a un hospital local.
Sandoval enfrenta múltiples cargos, entre ellos evasión de arresto o detención, conducción temeraria y tráfico de personas.
