“Schoolhouse Rock Live!” a stage musical adaptation of the classic 1970s cartoon series, opens tomorrow (THURSDAY) at the Kokernot Outdoor Theatre in Alpine.
Brett Scott, the play’s director, spoke early this week on KVLF about what to expect:
SCOTT1: “This young teacher, just before his first day of teaching ever, is super nervous, and he happens to stumble upon – just trying to settle his mind – some of these Schoolhouse Rock Live shorts on television. And then all of the characters come out of his mind and spring to life and sing him through everything he needs to know for that first day.” (0:19)
The play, supported by a cast of just six actors, features 22 songs that Scott says you just “can’t get out of your head.”
SCOTT2: “The way the show is structured, it teaches about math, it teaches about grammar – like, ‘Oh, yawn, wow I don’t think I can stand that,’ and you end up loving it. But it also teaches about civics. We’ve got “I’m Just a Bill,” we’ve got “The Preamble to the Constitution,” we’ve got “The Great American Melting Pot.” We’ve got all these things that Generation-X kind of grew up with thinking, ‘well this must be true.’ And maybe we just need a little reminder about what it means to be an American here on July Fourth.” (0:27)
Performances will be Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, from Thursday, July 2 to Sunday, July 19. All performances begin at 8 p.m. And there will not be a performance on July 4.
Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under and seniors 65 and older.
Admission is free for U.S. veterans and active-duty military.

The education service center for nearly twenty West Texas counties has named Alpine ISD superintendent Michelle Rinehart the Region 18 Superintendent of the Year.
Region 18 says the recognition reflects Rinehart’s QUOTE “outstanding leadership and dedication to her district and community.”
Over the past four years, through Rinehart’s work, Alpine ISD has made strides in improving academics and expanding opportunities for students, and investing in staff and facilities.

Next week, the city of Alpine will hold its next council meeting.
According to an agenda, council members are set to approve a resolution appointing Clarinda Espinoza as the interim city secretary. They’ll also discuss and potentially approve of an agreement with Alpine ISD over the use and management Manual Payne Field.
The city council meets Tuesday, July 7 at 5:30 p.m.

James Talarico, the Democratic candidate, vying for a U.S. Senate seat will hold a community rally in Marfa later this month.
The campaign event will be Sunday, July 12 at the Capri in Marfa.
According to the latest Times/Sienna poll, Talarcio and Ken Paxton, the state’s Republican state attorney general, are in a tie – each with 47 percent of the vote in the poll.

Later this summer, the Borderlands Research Institute at Sul Ross will host a three-day conference about tackling issues, strengthening partnerships and sustaining lands to support wildlife across Texas.
BRI, along with the Texas Wildlife Association and Texas Parks and Wildlife, will bring together landowners, industry experts, and like-minded conservationists to cover emerging issues in the Trans-Pecos, big game and non-game research and management, applied management, and land stewardship.
The Trans-Pecos Wildlife Conference takes place August 5 through 7 at the Morgan Center at Sul Ross.

“Schoolhouse Rock Live!”, una adaptación teatral musical de la clásica serie de dibujos animados de los años 70, se estrena mañana (jueves) en el teatro al aire libre Kokernot de Alpine.
Brett Scott, el director de la obra, habló a principios de esta semana en la emisora KVLF sobre qué esperar del espectáculo:

El centro de servicios educativos que atiende a casi veinte condados del oeste de Texas ha nombrado a Michelle Rinehart, superintendente del Distrito Escolar Independiente de Alpine (Alpine ISD), como Superintendente del Año de la Región 18.
La Región 18 señala que este reconocimiento refleja el —cito textualmente— “liderazgo excepcional y la dedicación” de Rinehart hacia su distrito y su comunidad.
En los últimos cuatro años, gracias a la labor de Rinehart, Alpine ISD ha logrado avances significativos en la mejora del rendimiento académico, la ampliación de oportunidades para los estudiantes y la inversión tanto en el personal como en las instalaciones.

Más adelante este verano, el Borderlands Research Institute (BRI) de Sul Ross organizará una conferencia de tres días centrada en abordar desafíos, fortalecer alianzas y conservar las tierras para apoyar a la vida silvestre en todo Texas.
El BRI, junto con la Texas Wildlife Association y el Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, reunirá a propietarios de tierras, expertos del sector y conservacionistas con intereses afines para tratar temas emergentes en la región de Trans-Pecos, la investigación y el manejo de especies de caza mayor y otras especies, la gestión aplicada y la administración responsable de la tierra.
