Good evening, today is Monday, January 9th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The City of Alpine has issued another boil-water notice less than three weeks after an earlier one, but this is just for the areas around the Country Club Estates.
A water main broke Sunday night, causing loss of water and lowered water pressure, and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality ordered the notice late Monday.
Residents should boil their water prior to consumption such as washing, brushing teeth and drinking.
Children, seniors, and persons with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to harmful bacteria.
The break in the eight-inch line occurred at night, which meant the city could not work on it until there was sunlight and all utilities were accounted for.
The Big Bend Beef 706 three-part beef cattle series program began Saturday in Alpine and will continue over five months with the second meeting in late March.
The program follows four locally-sourced steers throughout the feeding and finishing process, harvesting, carcass breakdown and evaluation of carcass quality and profitability.
AgriLife Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent Luke Hendryx said this type of large-scale program helps a variety of community members.
Hendryx: “It’s really good for producers but anybody who’s interested in the beef industry at all, you know if you want to gain a little bit of knowledge about where your meats coming from at the grocery store or direct beef, any of these programs are going to help you.”
The second session of the program will be hosted by AgriLife Extension Agricultural Law Specialist Tiffany Lashmet of Amarillo.
Lashmet will focus on the legal and economic factors associated with producers selling beef directly to consumers.
Hendryx said the program will help local producers succeed with consistent higher quality products and evolving business practices.
Hendryx: “A lot of the profit gets tied up in the back end of the beef industry. Everybody out here knows what it takes to get those cattle in the truck and then there’s a large gap there between when they leave here and when they get on your plate and hit the grocery store. So this program fills in a lot of those gaps for people.”
The event is open to the public but participants should preregister with the AgriLife Extension office for Brewster and Jeff Davis counties at 837-6207.

Speaking of beef, the 79th Annual Big Bend Livestock Association Stock Show is this weekend at the Alpine School District Ag Barn and other venues.
Weigh-ins begin Thursday and the first show begins at 9 Friday for lambs and goats followed by the steer show at 1, all at the Ag Barn.
The Horse Show will be at 5:30 at the Sul Ross SALE Arena.
Saturday will begin at 9 with the Swine Show at the Ag Barn and the awards and sale will once again be at the Gallego Center on the Sul Ross University campus.
Then comes honoree and senior recognitions with Rusty Mertink returning as auctioneer starting at 7.
The concession stand will open at 7 both Friday and Saturday mornings.
Breakfast both days will feature breakfast burritos, donuts, hot chocolate, Camp Coffee, soft drinks and water.
Lunch Friday will be cabrito and brisket burritos and Saturday will offer pork, cabrito and brisket burritos.

Hablando de carne de res, la septuagésima novena Exposición Anual de Ganado de la Asociación Ganadera de Big Bend es este fin de semana en el Ag Barn del Distrito Escolar Alpine y en otros lugares.
Los pesajes comienzan el jueves y el primer espectáculo comienza a las 9 el viernes para corderos y cabras, seguido por el espectáculo de novillos a la 1, todo en el Ag Barn.
El Show de Caballos será a las 5:30 en el Sul Ross SALE Arena.
El sábado comenzará a las 9 con la Muestra Porcina en Ag Barn y la entrega de premios y la venta volverán a ser en el Centro Gallego en el campus de la Universidad Sul Ross.
Luego viene el homenajeado y los reconocimientos senior con Rusty Mertink regresando como subastador a partir de las 7.
El puesto de comida abrirá a las 7 los viernes y sábados por la mañana.
El desayuno de ambos días incluirá burritos de desayuno, donas, chocolate caliente, Camp Coffee, refrescos y agua.
El almuerzo del viernes será burritos de cabrito y pechuga y el sábado ofrecerá burritos de puerco, cabrito y pechuga.
