A larger-than-usual audience of citizens turned out for the Alpine City Council meeting Tuesday, many of them to protest a plan to replat several blocks in west Alpine.
Michael McCarson and his wife Lynn had acquired the property near Brown and 14 th Streets with 80 small lots on it and wanted to replat it with ten much larger lots.
But his earlier effort failed when it was learned the city owned part of the property in the form of streets that had been planned but never built. So he came up with a new plat and refiled.
Nine of the citizens spoke against the plan, most of them saying his plan could greatly increase the density of the population with as many as 21 duplexes on the land.
More citizens indicated they agreed with the nine speakers but they did not present.
When the item came up for a vote, McCarson showed the council his new proposed plat which changed the 80 small lots to ten larger lots to encourage larger homes.
While the zoning would permit duplexes, he never mentioned the word “duplex” and said he just hoped to sell the land to provide larger homes and offered to buy the city land in question.
After a long discussion, council approved the first reading of the ordinance, some saying the second reading also would require another public hearing.
Council did turn down an application on a two-to-three vote for a wine and malt beverage permit for the newest Dollar Store on Highway 118 north.
One of the biggest turnouts we have seen at City Council was citizens protesting the new store when it was up for approval but the city later learned it could not prohibit the store going in.
The Way Out West Art Show with a Western flair by the Big Bend Arts Council opened Wednesday at the Big Bend Gallery at 115 West Holland Avenue in Alpine.
The show runs from January 11 to February 28 and is free and open to the public.
There will be a reception from 5 to 7 Friday and members are asked to bring a snack and enjoy the show.
The deadline for artists to submit their work for display was Tuesday and they can pick up their work when the show ends next month. Artists were allowed two entries each and they can submit replacements for any art that had sold if approved.

The Annual Big Bend Livestock Show is scheduled Friday and Saturday at the Ag Barn and we were notified of some changes to the schedule because of the weather.
Due to the threat of winter storm there has been a change in the show schedule.
The Lamb show will be Friday at 9 and the Goat Show will follow and then the Rabbit Show after that.
The Swine Show will begin at 9 Saturday and the sale will be Saturday evening at the Civic Center.
The event will feature a variety of livestock shows, a livestock sale and a silent auction.
The show provides an opportunity for students from the Big Bend region to exhibit their animals and participate in rodeo events.
Comptroller Glenn Hegar said last week that sales tax revenue totaled 4.1 billion dollars in December, just one percent more than in December 2023.
The majority of December sales tax revenue is based on sales made in November and remitted to the agency in December.
He said overall sales tax collections grew modestly and at less than the rate of general price inflation.
Hegar said this suggests a lack of growth in real sales taxable activity as continued high interest rates and depleted savings constrain spending. At the same time, he said, overall employment and income continued to grow.
The January report of activity in December is due any day.

Una audiencia de ciudadanos mayor de lo habitual acudió a la reunión del Ayuntamiento de Alpine el martes, muchos de ellos para protestar contra un plan para repavimentar varios bloques en el oeste de Alpine.
Michael McCarson y su esposa Lynn habían adquirido la propiedad cerca de las calles Brown y 14 con 80 lotes pequeños y querían replantearla con diez lotes mucho más grandes.
Pero su esfuerzo anterior fracasó cuando se supo que la ciudad poseía parte de la propiedad en forma de calles que habían sido planificadas pero nunca construidas. Así que se le ocurrió una nueva plataforma y la volvió a presentar.

Después de una larga discusión, el consejo aprobó la primera lectura de la ordenanza, algunos dijeron que la segunda lectura también requeriría otra audiencia pública.
El consejo rechazó una solicitud con una votación de dos a tres para un permiso de vino y bebidas de malta para la nueva tienda Dollar Store en la autopista 118 norte.
Una de las mayores participaciones que hemos visto en el Concejo Municipal fue la de los ciudadanos que protestaron por la nueva tienda cuando estaba en proceso de aprobación, pero la ciudad luego se enteró de que no podía prohibir la entrada de la tienda.
La exposición de arte Way Out West con un toque occidental del Big Bend Arts Council se inauguró el miércoles en la Galería Big Bend en West Holland Avenue 115 en Alpine.
El espectáculo se realizará del 11 de enero al 28 de febrero y es gratuito y abierto al público.
Habrá una recepción del viernes de 5 a 7 y se solicita a los socios traer un refrigerio y disfrutar del espectáculo.
La fecha límite para que los artistas enviaran sus trabajos para exhibición era el martes y podrán recogerlos cuando finalice la muestra el próximo mes. A los artistas se les permitieron dos entradas cada uno y pueden presentar reemplazos de cualquier arte que se haya vendido si se aprueba.

La Exposición Anual de Ganado de Big Bend está programada para el viernes y sábado en Ag Barn y se nos notificó sobre algunos cambios en el horario debido al clima.

La Exposición Porcina comenzará el sábado a las 9 y la venta será el sábado por la noche en el Centro Cívico.
El evento contará con una variedad de exhibiciones de ganado, una venta de ganado y una subasta silenciosa.
El espectáculo brinda una oportunidad para que los estudiantes de la región de Big Bend exhiban sus animales y participen en eventos de rodeo.
