At last night’s (TUESDAY’S) city council meeting, officials discussed the status of the dog park and improvements to it.
Mayor Catherine Eaves said the city had received an awning, donated by the library.
Adriana Holguin with the public works department updated council:
HOLGUIN1: “They have already planned out that they’ll be pouring the concrete pillars this Saturday. And the building will be getting assembled right after that. It’s pretty much moving forward after this Saturday.” (0:16)
During the council meeting, officials also approved the employment agreement with incoming city manager, Henry Arredondo.
The city expects Arredondo to start in the role on January 20.

Big Bend Regional Medical Center has named its next CEO.
Wendy Barnett is taking charge of the hospital, and brings nearly a decade of experience in healthcare leadership to the role. Most recently, Barnett served as the CEO of a hospital in Fairfax, Virginia, and before that was part of the leadership team at a hospital in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
In a press release announcing her new role, Barnett said she’s looking forward to working with the “dedicated physicians, nurses and employees” at Big Bend Regional Medical Center and QUOTE “build on the strong foundation already in place.”
Chris Lacy, the board chair of Big Bend Regional Medical Center, said the board is confident Barnett will continue advancing quality and access for the communities the hospital serves.
Barnett started in the role on Monday (Jan. 5).

Later this month, Far West Comic Con returns to Alpine. The annual celebration of pop-culture, anime and gaming will have a full schedule, from meet-and-greets with well-known voice actors and cosplay contests to gaming tournaments and live performances.
The Far West Comic Con takes place at the Alpine Civic Center on Saturday, Jan. 24 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

In the next two weeks, the Small Business Development Center at Sul Ross State University will host several training opportunities for business owners.
The first training is this tomorrow (THURSDAY), and in this two-hour session, you’ll learn how to create videos that reflect your brand, resonate with your audience, and support your goals. The webinar’s presenter, Stephanie Scheller (shell-ER) will show you how to clear up your message, how to plan for engaging content and how to create structure and creativity in your videos.
The virtual training will be Thursday, Jan. 8 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
And next week on Tuesday, Jan. 13, learn everything you need to be a better bookkeeper. In this session, you’ll go over the basics of bookkeeping, starting with why it matters for decision-making, tax compliance, and growth. The training is Jan. 13 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

This year’s Wildlife Weekend in Alpine will highlight the owls of the Davis Mountains.
The event is a three-day celebration of the Chihuahuan Desert wildlife, and will feature guided walks, speakers, film screenings and activities.
All events are free and open to the public.
The third annual Wildlife Weekend will take place from Jan. 30 to Feb. 1.

En la reunión del consejo municipal de anoche (martes), los funcionarios discutieron el estado del parque para perros y las mejoras que se le realizarán.
La alcaldesa Catherine Eaves informó que la ciudad había recibido un toldo, donado por la biblioteca.
Adriana Holguin, del departamento de obras públicas, actualizó al consejo:
cito: “Ya han planificado verter los pilares de concreto este sábado. Y la estructura se ensamblará inmediatamente después. Prácticamente todo avanzará a partir de este sábado”.
Durante la reunión del consejo, los funcionarios también aprobaron el contrato de trabajo con el nuevo administrador municipal, Henry Arredondo.
La ciudad espera que Arredondo asuma el cargo el 20 de enero.

El Centro Médico Regional Big Bend ha nombrado a su nueva directora ejecutiva.
Wendy Barnett asumirá la dirección del hospital y aporta casi una década de experiencia en liderazgo en el sector de la salud. Recientemente, Barnett se desempeñó como directora ejecutiva de un hospital en Fairfax, Virginia, y anteriormente formó parte del equipo directivo de un hospital en Las Cruces, Nuevo México.
En un comunicado de prensa que anunciaba su nuevo cargo, Barnett expresó su entusiasmo por trabajar con los “dedicados médicos, enfermeros y empleados” del Centro Médico Regional Big Bend y por “seguir construyendo sobre la sólida base ya existente”.
Chris Lacy, presidente de la junta directiva del Centro Médico Regional Big Bend, afirmó que la junta confía en que Barnett continuará impulsando la calidad y el acceso a la atención médica para las comunidades a las que sirve el hospital.
Barnett asumió el cargo el lunes 5 de enero.

En las próximas dos semanas, el Centro de Desarrollo de Pequeñas Empresas de la Universidad Estatal de Sul Ross ofrecerá varias oportunidades de capacitación para propietarios de negocios.

El Festival de la Vida Silvestre de este año en Alpine destacará a los búhos de las montañas Davis.
Este evento de tres días celebra la fauna del desierto de Chihuahua e incluirá caminatas guiadas, charlas, proyecciones de películas y diversas actividades.
Todos los eventos son gratuitos y abiertos al público.
La tercera edición del Festival de la Vida Silvestre se llevará a cabo del 30 de enero al 1ro de febrero.
