Two business failures came to light this week in Alpine, both blamed on the economy.
Alpine Wine on 5th Street posted on Facebook this week that the popular venue has been closed.
Sharon and Tom Kelner, who also operate a bed and breakfast on 8th Street, said it was with heavy hearts that they announced the closing.
They said they had been overwhelmed by the support of both locals and tourists but the economy made continuing impossible.
Any gift-card balances will be reimbursed as well as discounted bottles of wine to go. Contact Tom at 512/585-5002 for gift card and wine sales information.
The post said they will continue to operate Alpine Bed and Breakfast.
And Talent Art Center has lost its main sponsor for the coming year and is seeking contributions from the public to stave off having to close its doors.
The building and utilities are $850 per month. Talent Arts has received donations that will cover January but help is needed to continue beyond this month.
The studio plans to expand workshops and classes that would otherwise not be available to the community.
Carol Fairlie will teach classes in watercolor, oil painting and portraiture with live models and Monty Welt will teach youth spray painting techniques.
Plein air events and portrait workshops also could extend invitations to art groups outside of Alpine.
To help keep the lights on, make donations to K.A.C.I. Fullwood, Talent Arts, 102 North 8th in Alpine.
Fort Davis National Historic Site is re-instating a mask mandate effective Friday due to a high transmission level of airborne diseases in Jeff Davis County.
The Department of Interior has directed the site to use Center of Disease Controls Covid Community Levels to put in place guidance and masking requirements.
Mask are required in all park buildings, regardless of vaccination status, and in park areas where physical distancing cannot be maintained.
The site is following C.D.C. guidelines and will provide masks free of charge for those who do not have one.
In a Facebook post Friday, the site said the requirement may change on a weekly basis. To keep updated, call the visitor center at 426-3224.

A Brewster County deputy was alerted to the presence of two individuals camping on private property south of Marathon Thursday afternoon.
The two suspects, Ruslan Vasilyevich Krykun and Viktoriia Babak bypassed a lock on the entry gate and drove about a mile into the ranch.
There, they set up camp, complete with a tent, tables and chairs, coolers and a campfire.
The suspects were in possession of a firearm so they were charged with criminal trespass with a deadly weapon, a Class A misdemeanor.
They were booked into the Brewster County Jail, their vehicle was impounded and their firearm was logged as evidence.
The notice said Brewster County is a highly sought-after tourist destination but all property outside of the government properties is private.
And most parks require reservations for campers.
An Odessa man, 44-year-old Jesus Arevalo, has been sentenced 10 years in prison for distributing fentanyl.
The D.E.A. and F.B.I. opened a joint investigation through which undercover agents made multiple purchases of blue M-30 pills containing fentanyl from Arevalo.
He pleaded guilty on September 27 to one count of possession with intent to distribute 400 grams or more of a mixture and substance containing fentanyl.
