Good evening, today is Thursday, January 6th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Visitation for Robert Rubio Senior will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Davis Mountain Funeral Hall south of Fort Davis on Highway 17.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday with burial to follow at Saint Joseph Cemetery.
Robert died Wednesday at his home in Fort Davis surrounded by his loved ones at age 78.
He was born on June 7, 1943, in Falfurrias and was a member of the Gate Way Wisdom Church in Fort Davis.
Robert was preceded in death by a son and two sisters. Surviving are his wife, four children, two siblings and seven grandchildren.

Weigh-ins and other preliminary events for the 78th Annual Big Bend Livestock Show and Sale began Thursday with the final event scheduled for Saturday evening.
About 200 animals raised primarily by 4-H and F.F.A. students in the Tri-County area will be shown and then sold at auction.
Money raised for the students typically is used for tuition and other costs as they pursue advanced education.
The doors will open at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Pete P. Gallego Center at Sul Ross State University and the sale will begin at 6 with Rusty Mertink returning as auctioneer.
A silent auction will offer items donated by area businesses with proceeds going to the livestock association and excess funds going to scholarships to graduating seniors.
President Becky McCutcheon said some 100 volunteers will help from the weigh-ins all the way through the sale and cleanup after Saturday.

Big Bend National Park has had to close the Chisos Mountains Lodge Restaurant until further notice because of illness in some staff members.
The restaurant closure means the park’s only food service inside the park is unavailable. For more information call 477-2291.
A Brewster County deputy and a U.S. Border Patrol agent arrested a suspected smuggler and five illegal immigrants south of Alpine Wednesday.
Acting on a tip from a concerned citizen, the officers picked up the suspects after a traffic stop near the Highway 118 checkpoint.
Joanna Pulido was charged with five counts of smuggling of persons, a third-degree felony. The suspects from Mexico were referred to the Border Patrol for processing and deportation.
That same day, a Brewster County deputy rescued a pregnant female from Mexico who had been abandoned by the rest of her group.
The Border Patrol arrested a group of eight illegal immigrants Wednesday evening but they had but abandoned her in their failed attempt to flee.
She was referred to the Patrol for processing and deportation after a medical screening.
The Big Bend Sentinel reports that Presidio County and its treasurer Frances Garcia have agreed to a $700,000 settlement in a civil lawsuit by former county employee Katie Sanchez.
Sanchez was the county’s director of the Office of Management and Budget but Commissioners Court removed the department from the county budget in 2019.
Of course, her job went away with the department.
In her lawsuit, Sanchez alleged that the county and Garcia had retaliated against her when they abolished her department.
Sanchez had run unsuccessfully against Garcia for county treasurer in the March 2018 elections.
The suit alleges abolishing the department violated her First Amendment right to run for office without retribution.
A national trend has reached the Tri-County area that helps local animals in honor of the late Betty White.
The “Betty White Challenge” is an online event set for January 17 on what would have been her 100th birthday.
The challenge encourages people across the country to donate five dollars to animal rescues or shelters in her name.
For example, Alpine Animal Services has an Amazon wish list where people can buy something that immediately benefits the animals in the shelter.
Other services are available in the area apart from local city shelters like the Alpine Humane Society, Big Bend Pets and others.
