Services for Juanita Garcia Muniz of Alpine were Wednesday with burial on Thursday. She died December 27 in Del Rio at age 82.
Juanita was born on January 5, 1940, in Marathon where she attended grade school before moving to Alpine with her family and attending Centennial School.
There, she excelled as a basketball player where she competed at state. She later married Cruz Muniz, Sr.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two children and five siblings. Survivors include one daughter, six siblings, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Alzheimer’s Association. Online condolences may be left at alpinememorialfuneralhome.com.
The Alpine Municipal Court has issued its first quarterly warrant roundup of the year.
Its notice on Facebook lists more than 80 names of individuals with outstanding warrants to be cleared up.
It asks them to contact the court and resolve the citation before January 18.
If their name is not on the list but they suspect they have a warrant issue, they can call 837-0808 or email court.clerk@ci.alpine.tx.us.
The Sul Ross State University Alpine campus released the Fall 2022 Dean’s List in an announcement from the Office of Registration and Records.
The Dean’s List recognizes students who maintain a grade point average of 3.3 or higher on a 4-point scale.
Undergraduate students enrolled for 12 semester credit hours or more are eligible for the List. Graduate hours are not included in the computations.
The names listed are too numerous to mention here.
The 12th Big Bend Big Fix low-cost spay and neuter clinic will have its first free “Extra” session for cats only on January 23 in Marfa.
Cat owners and feral cat colony keepers can receive surgery, health and wellness checks and vaccines including rabies vaccines per cat for free with microchips available for 10 dollars.
Although the clinic is free, a suggested donation of 75 dollars is appreciated. Reservations are required and credit cards are accepted.
This is not to be confused with the regular Big Bend Big Fix 12, which will take place in Presidio January 21 and 23 for both cats and dogs.
Both the regular and Extra clinic is hosted by the Far West Texas Rescue Coalition and the veterinary team from Animal Balance, funded in part by the Permian Basin Area Foundation.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Trans-Pecos region will host two outreach events January 21 centered around living with black bears in West Texas.
The meetings were set after a black bear returned to Terlingua and ransacked various trash containers last month.
The first will be from 9:30 to 11:30 at the Bunkhouse at Bad Rabbit Café and the second will be from 2 to 4 at the J.W. “Red” Pattillo Community Center.
Wildlife biologists will lead discussions on the history of the black bear in west Texas, define natural bear behavior and those that increase the likelihood of human-bear conflict.
They will provide examples on how to successfully deter bears from your house, garbage and deer feeders.
A game warden will answer questions about the protected status of black bears in the state and punitive consequences of taking a threatened species.
The Borderlands Research institute will provide the first public update on collared black bears in South Brewster County and the new information gained on behavior and movement patterns.

La región Trans-Pecos del Departamento de Parques y Vida Silvestre de Texas organizará dos eventos de divulgación el 21 de enero centrados en vivir con osos negros en el oeste de Texas.
Las reuniones se establecieron después de que un oso negro regresara a Terlingua y saqueara varios contenedores de basura el mes pasado.
