A memorial service for Jose Willie Rodriguez of Alpine will be at 2 Saturday, January 20, at Alpine Memorial Funeral Home Memorial Chapel.
He died December 26 at age 80 after a brief battle with cancer with his family by his side.
A lifelong Alpine resident, “Pancha” was born on February 10, 1943, in Alpine where he operated several successful businesses and was a talented chef.
As a self-employed cook, he was able to bring people together, work with his family and teach his children a skill and a hard work ethic.
Jose is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marlene, five children, three siblings, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Our Congressman Tony Gonzales has sent us his comments when more than 60 members of the House Republican Conference met Wednesday in Eagle Pass, headed by Speaker Mike Johnson.
Gonzales said the Firefly facility that the group visited has a maximum capacity of one thousand people and six thousand were there and four thousand were getting released.
When that happens, he said, our communities get turned upside down. It may start in Eagle Pass, but then it quickly reaches San Antonio and quickly reaches all over the country.
Gonzales said the fix is to end catch and release and deport people that are here illegally by the thousands, not the dozens.
He said ranchers, sheriffs, judges, mayors and the people that live there every day will tell you the same thing.
The root is the cartels, Gonzales said. They turn it on and they turn it off.
December saw the most ever illegal border crossings, 302 thousand of them in December alone.
Also attending were Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson and Terrell County Sheriff Thad Cleveland.
Sheriff Dodson reported on Facebook Thursday that Sunday evening, a Brewster County deputy stopped a driver who was smuggling seven illegal aliens from Mexico south of Marathon.
The driver, identified as Raul Ortega, Jr., was charged with seven counts of smuggling of persons, including three enhanced charges.
These were Second Degree Felonies for smuggling of persons under 18 years of age.
Ortega was booked into the Brewster County Jail and the seven suspects from Mexico were referred to the US Border Patrol for processing.
Alpine Tourism Director Chris Ruggia has notified everyone he has contact information for who is involved in event planning in the Big Bend region.
For quite some time, he wrote, we have held twice-yearly event scheduling sessions at the Holland Hotel but he missed one last time.
To get back on track, he said, he has arranged with the Holland to meet in their lobby at 5:30 Monday, January 15.
He will have a big calendars and sharpie markers and will fill in everything he can find out about for the next 12 months.
He asked attendees to bring their event dates and add them to the calendars and see what everyone else is planning.
Those who can’t make it in person can email Ruggia with their event dates and he will add them to the calendar.

Alpine City Manager Megan Antrim has posted a notice on Facebook a letter outlining the city’s Outside Lighting Ordinance.
It was passed in 2021 and gave residents five years to get into compliance.
The intent is to reduce light pollution that makes it harder for scientists at McDonald Observatory to study the heavens, but it has other uses as well.
Proper lighting can reduce glare and improve visibility, conserve energy, benefit wildlife, improve tourism and many others.
All area jurisdictions have adopted similar ordinances and, as a result, we now are part of the largest International Dark Sky Reserve in the world.

El conductor, identificado como Raúl Ortega, Jr., fue acusado de siete cargos de tráfico de personas, incluidos tres cargos agravados.
Se trataba de delitos graves de segundo grado por tráfico de personas menores de 18 años.
