Funeral services with military honors for Rosendo Marquez Evaro will be at 10 Friday at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Shafter. He died last Friday at 91 surrounded by family.
A graveside service will follow at Desert Hills Cemetery in Presidio with Father Victorino Loresca Jr. of Marfa officiating.
Rosendo was born on September 30, 1932. His mother passed away when he was three months old and he was raised by his father’s sister and her husband in Redford.
He graduated from Presidio High School at 17 and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
On December 19, 1959, he married Elida Garcia and turned his attention to farming, raising cotton, cantaloupes and onions.
The farm is still in operation today, after 147 years. Rosendo is survived by his wife, two sons, three daughters, 12 grandchildren and three great
grandchildren.
And a memorial will be set at a later date for Rebecca “Becky” Smith, who died January 20 at the age of 92.
She was a registered nurse and a captain in the Air Force, stationed at Limestone, Maine. She ranched in the Alpine area for the last 40 years.
Becky was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister. Surviving are a longtime friend and partner and an extended family.
A 74-year-old Terlingua man has been sentenced in federal court in Alpine to more than seven years in prison for possession of child sexual abuse material.
Harold Lee McMullen was charged with possessing more than 400 images depicting the sexual abuse of children.
A Texas Department of Public Safety agent identified his computer’s address as exchanging the material with the streaming service Bit Torrent.
McMullen was arrested August 15 and pleaded guilty September 14.
The El Paso District of the Texas Department of Transportation has scheduled a series of in- person and on-line public meetings to review the future of area highway projects.
Alpine citizens will have a choice of virtual hearings or in person with one scheduled for 4 to 6 Thursday at the Alpine Civic Center.
TxDOT will review its 2025 to 2028 Rural Transportation Improvement Program with transportation projects that may be coming to our area.
The El Paso District includes El Paso, Hudspeth, Culberson, Jeff Davis, Presidio and Brewster Counties.
The Rural program includes all added capacity and regionally significant projects to be funded within a district during the next four years, including those eligible for federal funding.
It is the first step on the road to producing a Statewide Transportation Improvement Program.

The City of Alpine has scheduled the next monthly bulk pick up for next week and residents must schedule their pickup with Texas Disposal Systems this week.
Pickups may be scheduled between now and noon Friday. Call Texas Disposal Systems at 837- 0845 to schedule your pickup.
Once the pick-up has been scheduled, place your bulk items on the curb or right of way directly in front of your home.
Do not put anything out onto the roadway, in an alley or next to a dumpster.

Los servicios funerales con honores militares para Rosendo Márquez Evaro serán el viernes a las 10 en la Iglesia Católica Sagrado Corazón de Jesús en Shafter. Murió el pasado viernes a los 91 años rodeado de familiares.
Seguirá un servicio junto a la tumba en el cementerio Desert Hills en Presidio con el padre Victorino Loresca Jr. de Marfa oficiando.
Rosendo nació el 30 de septiembre de 1932. Su madre falleció cuando él tenía tres meses y fue criado por la hermana de su padre y su esposo en Redford.
Se graduó de Presidio High School a los 17 años y sirvió en el ejército estadounidense durante la Guerra de Corea.
El 19 de diciembre de 1959 se casó con Elida García y se dedicó a la agricultura, cultivando algodón, melones y cebollas.
La granja sigue en funcionamiento hoy, después de 147 años. A Rosendo le sobreviven su esposa, dos hijos, tres hijas, 12 nietos y tres bisabuelos.
