January 28th

Transcript:

Good evening, today is Friday, January 28th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.

The Alpine Porter’s grocery store on 2nd Street will begin closing at 6 p.m. starting Sunday until further notice.

During the next couple of weeks, Porter’s will finalize the merger and focus all efforts on serving customers at East Sul Ross Avenue and North 5th Street.

When a rebuild of the Porter’s Grocery Store on 2nd Street is completed, the store on Sul Ross Avenue will close for good.

Porter’s Thriftway is making major changes to its stores in the area, including a major rebuild of its older Alpine store on 2nd Street.

The renovations are expected to enlarge the older store, which was a Safeway and other nameplates in its past.

The grocer also has told its employees that, once the 2nd Street Store is renovated and reopened for business, the Sul Ross Avenue store will permanently close.

Brewster County law enforcement continues to interrupt cases of alleged smuggling of migrants from across the border.

A deputy sheriff arrested seven illegal migrants Tuesday evening, including one who also faces felony charges of smuggling of persons.

The deputy conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle north of Alpine.

Miguel Angel Garcia San Juan, the driver, was found to be transporting six migrants from Mexico. The suspect also was determined to be illegally in the United States. All were taken to the US Border Patrol for processing and deportation and the driver also faces state smuggling charges.
