Hello, I’m Z and this is the local and area news.
We heard this week that City Drug Store at Avenue E and 4th Street in Alpine is closing.
We called the store and they said Friday was the last day. They referred us to owner Mario Juarez and we tried to contact him without success.
If he responds in the coming days, we will report what he has to say.
The original founder of City Drug, Robert A. Bow, first ventured out West after graduating from the Louisville College of Pharmacy in Kentucky in 1906.
Robert worked under Alpine pharmacist and drugstore owner P.D. Coulson at Coulson Pharmacy.
In 1936, he purchased the business from Coulson, and named it City Drug Store.
He later passed the passed the business to his son Jack and Jack’s partner Jimmy Smith. They had the store for several years more before selling it and taking retirement about ten years ago.
Jack Bow died in 2018.
The Sul Ross State University Department of Education will participate in the National Read Aloud celebration on the Sul Ross Campus next month.
It will be February 7 at the Espino Conference Center on the second floor of the Morgan University Center.
National Read Aloud was created by LitWorld in 2010 and is organized annually in 173 countries.
Local families with pre-kindergarten through fourth grade students are invited to participate and will be asked to register for the event through their school.
The featured book for the event, I Remember: Poems and Pictures of Heritage, includes poetry by Guadalupe Garcia McCall, author and Sul Ross graduate.
Pizza will be served beginning at 6 p.m., and McCall will begin the program by sharing her poetry.
Then will come several honored readers including Mary Beth Garrett from Alpine Public Library, Mayor Catherine Eaves, Sul Ross First Lady Lupita Hernandez and others.
Each participating student will be given a bookmark to use for a prize they can receive by visiting Alpine Public Library.
The event is underwritten by a two-thousand-dollar grant from Humanities Texas and by a one-thousand-dollar donation from West Texas National Bank in Alpine.
Alpine’s Front Street Books provided a discount on materials used for the event.

Alpine Fire Rescue has said that it is always looking for new, passionate members to join the team as volunteer firefighters.
The department posted on Facebook that it pays to volunteer to learn valuable skills and techniques and earn certifications in public safety and firefighting.
It also lets you protect and serve your community, work with other agencies to help put you on a career path, be part of a team that supports one another and many more.

The tiny town of Valentine between Marfa and Van Horn will host the 12th Annual Valentine in Valentine, which it calls a “West Texas Palooza, Rain, shine, snow or swelter” next month.
Melissa Hope Gardner told us she will be back at the Mercantile this year on February 17 and the headliner is Jimmie Vaughan.
She said Sheverb and The Pulpit Ramblers. The Pecos River Band and Primo y Beebe from Marfa also will perform from 2 to 10.
Jimmie Vaughn is an American blues rock guitarist and singer, four-time Grammy-winner and the brother of the late Texas blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Jimmie most recently toured with Eric Clapton and was also the guitarist from the American blues band the Fabulous Thunderbirds.
