Good evening, today is Tuesday, January 24th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The Big Bend Livestock Association Show and Sale earlier this month brought in what may be a record in sales to youngsters for their animals.
Agrilife Extension Agent Luke Hendrix told County Commissioners Court Tuesday that the sale earned, in his words, “just shy of” $360,000.
The Big Bend event involves 4H and Future Farmers of America members who raise animals for awards then then sell them at auction.
In other action, Commissioners agreed to negotiate a contract with Gov O.S. to compile a list of short-term rentals in the county.
Treasurer Julie Morton said Gov O.S. was low bidder among two that responded. A detailed contract will be negotiated and voted on at a future meeting.
The relatively-new concept of short-term rentals, also known as bed and breakfasts or B.N.B.s, are not paying local Hotel Occupancy taxes in many cases.
They paid state taxes through the trade association Air B.N.B. but it did not collect local taxes.
And Emergent Air Ambulance Program Manager Walter Kuykendall told the court his new ambulance service does not use red lights and sirens on non-emergency calls.
This came in his regular report to the court.
The Museum of the Big Bend will host a Grand Opening for the new Emmett and Miriam McCoy Building at the Sul Ross State University Alpine Campus.
The Big Bend Regional Hospital District has appointed Reagan Reed, the superintendent of Terlingua Common School District, to its Board of Directors.
Reed filled the unexpired term for Greg Henington who resigned from the post when he took office as Brewster County Judge.
Henington is the former chief of Terlingua Fire and E.M.S. and Reed most recently served on that group’s board.
Reed said the mission of the hospital district is to arrange for funding care for the indigent and joining the Board will allow him to advocate for community members in need.
The Granada Theatre will kick off its family dance series next Friday with a Barn Dance from 6:30 to 10 with lessons fit for everyone regardless of dancing experience.
The Alpine Downtown Association, doing business as the Alpine Business Alliance, will have an election of officers at its next meeting at 1:30 Wednesday.
It adopted the A.B.A. name last year because some felt they could not participate if they were not located downtown.
Officers to be elected are president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. The new slate will serve until January, 2024.
The meeting will be in-person at the Alcove Social at 211 East Holland Avenue, the former Saddle Club. It also will be carried virtually via zoom.

The Alpine Ambassadors have scheduled a ribbon cutting at 5:30 Thursday at the Food Pantry at 933 East Gallego Avenue.
The pantry moved from its former address on Neville Haynes in the fall of 2021.
Volunteer Jan Moeller said the new site provides better space making it easier to move around and move supplies from one place to another on the same floor.
She said the pantry is grateful to the community and the Foundations that contributed to the building fund.
They are the Permian Basin Area Foundation, Abell-Hanger Foundation and the Wayne & JoAnn Moore Charitable Foundation.
Sul Ross State University has announced the next Sully Showcase will be March 3 for prospective Sul Ross students and their families.
The on-campus event offers future Lobos the opportunity to explore various academic offerings and campus services by Sul Ross.
