Joe Brooks IV, beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 13 in Alpine. He was 88.
Born in Haskell, Texas, Joe was a dedicated and hardworking individual who left an indelible mark on those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A proud veteran, Joe served honorably in the Army National Guard, and after his military service, he pursued a career as an accountant, a field in which he exhibited exceptional diligence and dedication throughout his life.
Joe was known for being a bit of an introvert, yet his quiet demeanor belied a deep and abiding love for his family and community. He took great joy in the simple pleasures of life, with gardening being one of his cherished hobbies. His green thumb was evident in the thriving gardens he tended, which served as a testament to his nurturing spirit.
In addition to gardening, Joe was passionate about family and politics, often engaging in lively discussions that reflected his keen mind and interests. He found immense joy in spending time with loved ones, always prioritizing their well-being and happiness.
Joe is survived by his loving wife, Lucy Brooks, his two sons, two grandchildren and his sister. Together, they will carry forward his legacy of hard work, integrity, and devotion to family.
As we remember Joe Brooks IV, we honor not just the life he lived, but the kindness he showed to others and the love he shared with his family.
His presence will be deeply missed but fondly remembered in the hearts of all who knew him.

Borderlands Research Institute at Sul Ross State University has been awarded a $40,000 grant, which will help the center continue its undergraduate mentorship program.
The grant, given by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, will go toward investing in paid internship opportunities with BRI that help students get ready for careers in the natural resource industry. The program pairs undergraduate students with graduate students and gives the mentees hands-on experience that help build technical skills and helps them gain professional connections.

At the end of the week, forecasters with the National Weather Service say an arctic cold front will hit the region, bringing with it potentially record-breaking lows
Meteorologists in Midland say it’s looking like the region could even see a “wintry precipitation” as early as Friday.

The group West of the Pecos Republican Women will hold a meet and greet for Republican candidates running for election.
Brandon Herrera, the Republican candidate running for Congressional District 23, will be in attendance. Herrera narrowly lost to incumbent Tony Gonzales in the 2024 Republican primary. Keith Barton will also be there; he’s also running for Congressional District 23.
Other candidates include County Judge Greg Henington and county commissioner Mo Morrow.
The meet and greet is next month at the Alpine Civic Center on February 10, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

There’s still time to register for this year’s Water in the Desert conference.
The three-day event is next month and focuses on the future of water in the Chiahuan Desert of West Texas.
You can join landowners, scientists, policymakers, and community leaders from Feb. 11th through the 13th at Sul Ross State University and engage in conversations, sessions and field trips that will touch on water scarcity, access and the region’s many aquifers.

Joe Brooks IV, amado esposo, padre, hermano y amigo, falleció pacíficamente el 13 de enero en Alpine. Tenía 88 años.
Nacido en Haskell, Texas, Joe fue una persona dedicada y trabajadora que dejó una huella imborrable en quienes tuvieron el placer de conocerlo.
Veterano orgulloso, Joe sirvió con honor en la Guardia Nacional del Ejército y, tras su servicio militar, desarrolló una carrera como contador, profesión en la que demostró una diligencia y dedicación excepcionales a lo largo de su vida.
Joe era conocido por ser algo introvertido, pero su carácter tranquilo ocultaba un profundo y sincero amor por su familia y su comunidad. El Instituto de Investigación de la Región Fronteriza de la Universidad Estatal de Sul Ross ha recibido una subvención de 40.000 dólares, que permitirá al centro continuar con su programa de mentoría para estudiantes de pregrado.
