Tomorrow (FRIDAY), Far West Guitars is holding a song-writing event in Alpine.

On Friday, Jan. 2, head to the music store and take your guitar and a few songs to play.

The First Friday song swap starts at 6 p.m. 

Far West Guitars is located at 114 N. 6th Street.

Tomorrow (FRIDAY) is the last day to schedule a bulk trash pick-up with the city of Alpine.

Each household is limited to 5 items or 3 cubic yards worth items to be picked up.

Residents will have until Friday, Jan. 2 to schedule their pickup for the following week.

Next week, the city of Alpine will hold their next council meeting next week.

According to an agenda for the meeting, the council will hold the ceremonial swearing-in of the Alpine Police Department by Chief of Police Kirk Caughman. 

The council will also discuss the status of the dog park and the steps to take to continue improvements.

The council meets Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 4 p.m. at the council chambers, located at 803 W. Holland Avenue.

The Big Bend Arts Council is looking for submissions for its next show, “Way out West-Wildlife.”

The show will run from Jan. 8 to Feb. 24, and the group is looking for work centered on a theme of wildlife to coincide with Wildlife Weekend in Alpine.

The deadline to get your work to the gallery is Jan. 6 at 4:30 p.m.

Next week, the  Big Bend Live Stock Association will host its 82nd annual stock show. 

The show begins Friday, Jan. 9 at the Alpine ISD ag barn – beginning with the goat show at 9 a.m. And then at 5:30 on Friday, the horse show kicks off at the Sul Ross SALE Arena.

The stock show will continue on Saturday, Jan. 10 with a steer show, an awards show and auction. There will be food each day for sale.

Throughout this month, a city-county taskforce will hold three town halls to get public feedback on ground ambulance services in the region. 

The taskforce has been meeting to figure out how to move forward with those services, since the contract with the current EMS provider will not be renewed, and it ends in May of next year.

The taskforce includes Alpine, Brewster County officials and community members.

The first town hall will be Jan. 21 at 6 p.m. at the Civic Center. The other town halls will be Wednesday, Jan. 26, at Sul Ross State University and Saturday, Jan. 31.
