Good evening, today is Thursday, January 19th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Trans-Pecos region will host two local outreach events in South County Saturday centered around living with black bears in West Texas.
After a black bear returned to the area and ransacked various trash containers recently, T.P.W.D. promised to set up the meetings.
The first will be at the Bunkhouse at Bad Rabbit Café from 9:30 to 11:30. The second will be at the J.W. “Red” Pattillo Community Center from 2 to 4.
Biologists will lead discussions on the history of the black bear in west Texas, define natural bear behavior and behaviors that increase the likelihood of human-bear conflict.
A Game Warden will also be present to answer questions about the protected status of black bears in the state and consequences of taking a threatened species.
The Borderlands Research institute will provide the first public update on collared black bears in South County and the new information gained on behavior and movement patterns.
Big Bend Ranch State Park will host plenty of events this weekend from beautiful hikes to educational garden walks.
Saturday will start with Herbology 101, with Ranger Layla Spurlock at the Barton Warnock Visitor Center from 10 to 11.
Participants will explore the desert garden to learn about desert plants and their importance to life’s survival in the Chihuahuan Desert. This event is free with park admission.
From 1 to 2 Saturday is Roadside Geology with ranger Regina Lillibridge at the West Contrabando Parking Lot eight miles from the Warnock Center.
Participants will experience an introduction to the geology that shapes Big Bend, some rock talk and a geology-focused itinerary for exploring River Road.
And an optional short walk will be to the scenic overlook. Tickets are five dollars for adults 13 and older and is free for children 12 and under and those with a Texas Parks Pass.
Sunday from 1 to 2, the Park will host a “What in the Hoodoo” River Health Hike at the Hoodoos trailhead for free with park admission or with a Texas Parks Pass.
Bring comfortable clothing, walking shoes, a hat and water, especially for the Hoodoo trail hike since there are no restrooms or water fountains along the trail.
Also Saturday is the First Annual Winter Gala by the Big Bend Chamber of Commerce with community awards and a silent auction.
It will include a drawing for a two-thousand-gallon water tank and music by Ted Arbogast and Mark Lewis.
Dinner will be Italian Cuisine, including vegetarian and gluten-free options and beer and wine.
Tickets to the event at the Oasis Conference Room at Far Flung Outdoor Center are 45 dollars per person and dress is “Terlingua Formal,” which the notice defines as dress your best.
Doors open at 5:30 but seats are limited.

Dark Texas Skies and Marathon Public Library are hosting a Family Star Party for families over Orion Constellation Tracking at 6:50 Friday evening at the Sky Park at Marathon Motel.
Admission will be free for those 17 years old and younger and for Marathon families with children. Those 17 and older will pay $10 each.
