Alpine School Superintendent Dr. Michelle Rinehart sat down with our Martin Benevich Friday for her show, “Buck Banter.”
The first six minutes were spent on the then upcoming Big Bend Livestock Show and Sale over the weekend.
She expressed pride in her students for advancing their future by caring for and showing their animals.
But Dr. Rinehart also spent several minutes talking about how the district overcame a serious shortfall in state funding, using grants and other sources.
Alpine I.S.D. was among the lowest-funded districts in the state in teacher salaries and the lowest in all of West Texas, she said.
Dr. Rinehart said they were able to increase teacher compensation by 3.2 million dollars in the last year and a half with grants primarily from the Big Bend Area Foundation.
“ … and so the it was a board and the administrators’ priorities to increase salaries, especially in what has been a record inflation. And so at the end of this year, I’m happy to report that we’ve been able to report much more competitive salaries for all district employees over the last two years.”
She said the board was able to increase administrative staff salaries by four thousand dollars, teacher salaries by three thousand and administrative salaries by 15 hundred dollars.
And teachers with 25 years of service now get annual increases where they had none before and all with no increase in state funding.
Dr. Rinehart said many school districts have been forced to pass deficit budgets. But while Alpine district’s budget has a small deficit, it is nearly balanced.
A ceremony to announce the start of Frontera News, an on-line newspaper covering West Texas and Northern Mexico, has been scheduled for Thursday, February 1.
Robert Halpern, former publisher of the Big Bend Sentinel, and members of his family announced the new venture earlier this month.
The announcement said Frontera News will be a non-profit venture in partnership with the El Paso Community Foundation.
It said the site will offer, quote, “freely-accessed, non-profit journalism covering issues that shape lives and communities across the Trans-Pecos and Big Bend country.”
Family members include Alberto Tomas Halpern, who was born in El Paso and raised in Marfa, Rosario Salgado Halpern, who was born and raised in Presidio, and Robert.
He was born and raised in Alpine and grew up in a family department store business.
Robert holds a journalism degree and worked at the Odessa American and El Paso Times before editing and publishing the Sentinel and International in Marfa until selling them recently.
The announcement asks for contributions from the public, both with news items and financial backing.
The official launch will be from 5 to7 February 1 at the Ritchey Hotel and guests can become founding members with a contribution at the door or a donation on-line.

The Big Bend Arts Council is reminding its members that January is Membership Renewal Time.
It is 25 dollars for the year and that provides access to various small perks.
Members can exhibit their work for a month at the West Texas National Bank in Alpine as well as Arts Council shows throughout the year.
Five dollars will get your work in one of the Councils six or so shows a year.
And they can submit pictures of their work and display a link to your website on the bigbendartscouncil.org

Pero la Dra. Rinehart también dedicó varios minutos a hablar sobre cómo el distrito superó un grave déficit en la financiación estatal mediante subvenciones y otras fuentes.
Alpine I.S.D. estaba entre los distritos con menores fondos del estado en cuanto a salarios de maestros y el más bajo de todo el oeste de Texas, dijo.
La Dra. Rinehart dijo que pudieron aumentar la compensación de los maestros en 3,2 millones de dólares en el último año y medio con subvenciones principalmente de la Big Bend Area Foundation.

Y los maestros con 25 años de servicio ahora obtienen aumentos anuales donde antes no tenían ninguno y todo ello sin aumento en la financiación estatal.
La Dra. Rinehart dijo que muchos distritos escolares se han visto obligados a aprobar presupuestos deficitarios. Pero si bien el presupuesto del distrito alpino tiene un pequeño déficit, está casi equilibrado.
Para el jueves 1 de febrero se programó una ceremonia para anunciar el inicio de Frontera News, un periódico en línea que cubre el oeste de Texas y el norte de México.
Robert Halpern, ex editor del Big Bend Sentinel, y miembros de su familia anunciaron la nueva empresa a principios de este mes.
El anuncio decía que Frontera News será una empresa sin fines de lucro en asociación con El Paso Community Foundation.
Dijo que el sitio ofrecerá, cito, “periodismo sin fines de lucro y de libre acceso que cubrirá temas que dan forma a vidas y comunidades en todo el país de Trans-Pecos y Big Bend”.
