The Marfa City Council has approved new fees for Emergency Medical Services and learned more about a new ambulance at its meeting this week.
The Big Bend Sentinel reports E.M.S. Director Bert Legarde told the council that rates had not been updated in at least four years and most are now below standard.
He also said only those without medical insurance of some kind would be affected by the change because most patients have some kind of insurance.
Basic life support fees will raise from 12 hundred to 14 hundred dollars and advanced life support fees will go from 12 hundred 50 dollars to 16 hundred.
And mileage fees for the distance covered with the patient in the ambulance will go from 17.50 to 24 dollars per mile.
Legarde also told the council about a new 230-thousand-dollar ambulance financed by grants from the Big Bend Regional Hospital District and others.
He told the paper it will have U.V. light technology to provide sterilization for patients and a system to stabilize the ride to allow provider to provide better patient care.
Sul Ross State University will host the Sixth Annual Undergraduate and Graduate Research Symposium as a two-day, in-person and virtual event on April 17 and 18.
Students from all Sul Ross campuses and academic disciplines will cover research or creative work from summer, 2022, through the current semester.
Students will present their research as oral presentations, panel discussions and posters from 1 to 6 April 17 in the Morgan University Center Espino Conference Center.
President Dr. Carlos Hernandez will provide opening remarks and two professors will deliver the symposium keynote address at noon.
They are assistant professor of Psychology Dr. Alicia Trotman and Dr. Tiffany Culver, assistant professor of Psychology at Schreiner University.
On April 18, the symposium will be virtual from 3 to 6 on the Sul Ross Undergraduate and Graduate Symposium website.
Students will show their pre-recorded presentations followed by a live Q. and A. with the presenters.

A meeting Monday will give event planners a picture of the social calendar for the rest of the current fiscal year, which runs through October 30.
Alpine Tourism Director Chris Ruggia has invited events planners to a session at 5:30 Monday in the lobby of the Holland Hotel.
He will have big calendars and sharpie markers and will fill in everything he can find out about for the rest of the year.

The Alpine Public Library announces that registration for its spring G.E.D. classes is open from 9 to noon next Friday.
Orientation will be at 5 Tuesday, January 23, with classes starting Monday, January 29. To register, bring a government-issued photo I.D., Social Security card and utility bill for address verification to the Alpine Public Library.
And the library says it’s time to get ready for a Teddy Bear Sleep-over at the library from 4 to 5:30 Friday, January 19.
Kids can practice reading to their stuffed toys before leaving them at the library overnight.
At 11 Saturday, plush toys and kids alike can take part in a special story time.

El Ayuntamiento de Marfa aprobó nuevas tarifas para los servicios médicos de emergencia y conoció más sobre una nueva ambulancia en su reunión de esta semana.
El Big Bend Sentinel informa que el director de E.M.S., Bert Legarde (luh-GARD) dijo al consejo que las tarifas no se habían actualizado en al menos cuatro años y que la mayoría ahora están por debajo del estándar.
También dijo que sólo aquellos sin seguro médico de algún tipo se verían afectados por el cambio porque la mayoría de los pacientes tienen algún tipo de seguro.
Las tarifas de soporte vital básico aumentarán de 1200 a 1400 dólares y las tarifas de soporte vital avanzado pasarán de 1250 dólares a 1600.
Y el coste del kilometraje por la distancia recorrida con el paciente en la ambulancia pasará de 17.50 a 24 dólares por kilómetro.
Legarde también habló al consejo sobre una nueva ambulancia de 230 mil dólares financiada con subvenciones del Distrito Hospitalario Regional de Big Bend y otros.
Le dijo al periódico que tendrá rayos U.V. tecnología ligera para proporcionar esterilización a los pacientes y un sistema para estabilizar el viaje para permitir que el proveedor brinde una mejor atención al paciente.
La Universidad Estatal de Sul Ross organizará el Sexto Simposio Anual de Investigación de Pregrado y Posgrado como un evento virtual y presencial de dos días de duración, los días 17 y 18 de abril.

La Biblioteca Pública de Alpine anuncia que la inscripción para su G.E.D. de primavera estará abierta desde las 9 hasta el mediodía el próximo viernes.
La orientación será el martes 23 de enero a las 5, y las clases comenzarán el lunes 29 de enero. Para registrarse, traiga una identificación con fotografía emitida por el gobierno, una tarjeta de Seguro Social y una factura de servicios públicos para verificar la dirección a la Biblioteca Pública de Alpine.
Y la biblioteca dice que es hora de prepararse para una fiesta de pijamas con ositos de peluche en la biblioteca de 4 a 5:30 el viernes 19 de enero.
