Good evening, today is Wednesday, January 11th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The 79th Annual Big Bend Livestock Association Stock Show and Sale starts Thursday at the Alpine School District Ag Barn and other venues.
It all starts at 4 Thursday with weigh-ins for hogs, lambs and goats at the Ag Barn and steers at the Hill Top Pens with shows Friday and Saturday.
The Buyer’s registration and buyer’s social begins at 6:30 Saturday and awards will be presented of Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Buckles and Showmanship Buckles.
Then comes honoree and senior recognitions with Rusty Mertink returning as auctioneer starting at 7.
Stock Show Vice-President McKayla Ritchie said the event is only growing, requiring more volunteers year after year.
McKayla: “There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes and people don’t realize exactly how much is put into it so we appreciate definitely all of our volunteers, sponsors, donors and we just couldn’t make it without them.”

Budding young poets have a chance to show off their skills at the Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering February 17 and 18 at Sul Ross State University and other Alpine venues.
Students from Kindergarten through high school will compete in five grade levels and all will receive a personalized certificate of participation via e-mail.
The top three places in each division will receive a special plaque award and the opportunity to share their poem during the session, “Carrying on the Tradition” during the show.
Topics must be related to ranch life, be at least four lines for level one and eight for higher levels, be handwritten or typed and the original work of the student.
Only one entry is allowed from each student, those in a language other than English must have a translation attached and no illustrations or decorations should adorn the paper.
They must be postmarked or e-mailed by January 21.

The Don’t mess with Texas Scholarship Contest is now accepting applications for the 2023 school year.
Any Texas high school senior in public, private or home school who plans to attend an accredited Texas college or university in the fall semester is eligible to apply.
Keep Texas Beautiful joins the Don’t Mess with Texas Scholarship Contest and will award nine thousand dollars in May.
Winners will be chosen on the students’ results in leading efforts focused on educating communities about the importance of keeping our state clean and litter-free.

Alpine Environmental Services and Keep Alpine Beautiful are inviting citizens to a community cleanup of the Cactus Garden 9 to noon January 28.
Volunteers can meet at the Prescription Shop parking lot at 909 East Holland Avenue to clean the Cactus Garden to the East of McDonalds. Volunteers will receive McDonald’s coupons.
